Gov. Jerry Brown and the Democratic Party-controlled state Legislature and the army of bureaucrats and tax collectors doing their bidding have triumphed again. California-based Apple Computer will build a spanking new, $210-million manufacturing plant.
In China.
Is anyone surprised? The corporate tax rate in California is horrendous, the workforce is taxed worse than the corporations, the cost of living is off the charts thanks in large part to the costly burdens added by government regulations and housing, well, you know how that compares for California versus the rest of the world...

Well, NLRB... let’s see you try to stand in the way of THIS one.
Poll at this link badly needs Freeping!
China is insisting that firms that want to use China’s rare earth metals produce their products in China instead of just exporting the raw materials to be finished elsewhere.
Arguably, this makes sense to a country that has a historically justifiable reason to be sensistive to colonial mercantilism. But in this case I believe it has more to do with China trying to steal tech from the West.
Why not? Apple would have to be out of their freaking minds to even think about putting a manufacturing plant in California. They’d do better just flushing the profits down the drain if they had a high-dollar plant there with (ugh!) Unionized California employees. They would end up so far in the hole it wouldn’t be funny.
As opposed to the US government trying to steal wealth from the country's productive citizens?
My understanding is that Foxconn, not Apple is building the plant, though the plant will be dedicated to Apple mobile devices.
The other thing to note is that Apple has billions upon billions of dollars in foreign-earned profit that they cannot bring back to the U.S. without confiscatory taxes. So, they’ve got to do something with it outside the U.S., such as building manufacturing plants.
Ol Jer got a fortune cookie in the mail. It read
“Go suck a California lemon you stupid shirt”
Not to mention the cost of capital caught up in likely delays because of spurious lawsuits for one cause or another.
California real estate is WAY too expensive to be sullying it with manufacturing plants....
Besides, to get a reliable stream of employee recruits, China has SCADS of smart, diligent college grads who will work at entry-level wages. No American college graduate is willing to start at entry-level wages, mostly because there is already a $100,000 mortgage against future earning power.

You are correct. There is NO WAY Apple would ever want to have 10,000 direct employees in China
That’s the free traitor way to obfuscate the fact that Apple uses slave labor to build their products.
There are 23 RTW states that would have been happy to have that plant. I really don’t think the China va California was the only choice. Apple has been paid off by the ChiComs, Apples are red for a reason. And I am an avid Mac user.
Import Tariff.
Easy solution for un-American companies!
You have to realize that it would be hard to claim that the profits were not from a US-based income if they went to a RTW state. Apple likely has its foreign manufacturing plants under another entity rather from the so-called “California-Based Apple”. No one said its liberal founders were stupid.
Right you are. It would be nice if one of those governors pressured Apple as to why their state wasn't chosen. I'd like to know myself.
It could be a "teachable moment" for the whole country.
So they opt to not work at all? Your comment makes no sense.
Worth repeating. If the democrats want to tax expat companies I cannot think of a better way. I can't say I would fault the democrats either. And no this DOES NOT make me pro Union. Only 7% of the workforce is unionized and declining. This is about american jobs and national security.
They(Apple et al) are free to get in bed with ChiComs and we are free to tariff them. The problem is both parties have been paid off by the ChiComs so tariffs are never going to happen. Yes it is a conspiracy.
