Another solid Democrat state that will tip the scale in all future Presidential elections

Just what we need: another welfare state. That'll make 58, won't it (according to 0bummer's math)?

I think the rest of us should have some say in this too.

It makes sense for puerto ricans to pay taxes, follow environmental lead laws, put wheelchair lifts at their swimming pools, drive electric cars, have their electric bills necessarily skyrocket, and become commies.

Bad idea, but the law says it is up to the Puerto Ricans, not the rest of us. Congress has long since abdicated responsibility for decisions on PR statehood. I think it will be economically fine for PR, a great sucking sound for the rest of the US, and will do severe harm to the economy.

But whatever--it is up to them, if they want statehood they can get it.

They have a pretty sweet deal right now. Most of the benefits of statehood with none of the liabilities. I don’t think they’ll vote for it. Unless The Community Agitators Formerly Known as ACORN and Bill and Bernadine are down there.

The option to remain a protectorate has been removed from the ballot. The options are statehood or independence. Independence means Uncle Sugar stops sending the goodies.

It’s an interesting question. What if PR becomes a full state?

I wonder how this will affect the attitudes among the illegal alien population (generally from Mexico and Central America) about coming here. Let’s say we now have a state that’s in the non-contiguous group (Alaska and Hawai’i are already there) that also has a majority Hispanic population. How will that affect the “immigration reform” debate in the U.S. when cries over “the lost territory of Aztlan” are drowned out by cheers over the rising of the new star in the Caribbean?

Puerto Ricans don’t want to be Americans. I think they have already voted no about 5 times. I would not hold my breath if I was the Gov of PR.
