The Governor of Puerto Rico is confident Puerto Ricans will vote to make the U.S. territory a state this fall, and despite recent comments from GOP Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, English will not need to be made the primary language for that to happen.
As a territory, Puerto Ricans cannot vote in the general election November 6th. But, they will vote on a statehood referendum on that day. Gov. Luis Fortuno tells Fox News it will be a process but he is confident it will happen.
"It just makes sense. We have been part of the United States since 1898. Natural-born citizens since 1917. Our men and women have served in greater numbers than most states since then. And I believe that it's the right thing to do in the 21st century to allow almost 4 million American citizens to express our will and then to work with the White House and hopefully President Romney to address this issue."
All four of the GOP Presidential hopefuls would like to see Puerto Rico become a state. But it is Mitt Romney's more aggressive posture that helped him win Fortuno's endorsement.

They have a pretty sweet deal right now. Most of the benefits of statehood with none of the liabilities. I don’t think they’ll vote for it. Unless The Community Agitators Formerly Known as ACORN and Bill and Bernadine are down there.

How about if Hawaii and Puerto Rico join to form their own country so they can screw themselves and not the rest of us?
Congress has to pass a law to allow a new state to be admitted to the Union.
Or, has Congress already done this with Puerto Rico? So are we at the point where P.R. is in, if its residents vote for it on November 6th?
The option to remain a protectorate has been removed from the ballot. The options are statehood or independence. Independence means Uncle Sugar stops sending the goodies.
Of course not. But I don’t think they can force statehood on the Commonwealth based on the existing laws.
It’s an interesting question. What if PR becomes a full state?
I wonder how this will affect the attitudes among the illegal alien population (generally from Mexico and Central America) about coming here. Let’s say we now have a state that’s in the non-contiguous group (Alaska and Hawai’i are already there) that also has a majority Hispanic population. How will that affect the “immigration reform” debate in the U.S. when cries over “the lost territory of Aztlan” are drowned out by cheers over the rising of the new star in the Caribbean?
Any excuse to change OUR flag, right 0bama? Maybe a crescent, fist, or your photo on it as well?
At least it would the $17 billion in subsidies we give PR every year.

Should the citizens of the US decide if they want another state? I guess the Congress might have already abdictated that right. Possibly another thing with which to damn the Congress.

With statehood they give up the option, equally available right now, of voting to become an independent country, with all the perks that go with being a separate nation. No doubt the UN would be glad to admit them as a full member and help them out with all sorts of goodies. They will also lose some concessions which they enjoy as a territory but will not as a state, tax breaks and the like.
If they vote for statehood, they are "going all in" with the USA. They have not wanted to, up until now; so I would wonder, why now? If I were a PR citizen I would vote for the status quo. But I'm not.
Politically, Islanders have a viable two party system. They are not like mainland welfare clients. It would be a mistake to write them off as automatic welfare democrats.
That's my off-the-cuff take, others may differ.
the “fix” is in, they have skewered the ballot so it will be statehood. This is part of the commie transformation plan.
You can imagine the political advantages to past Congress critters of passing such a default condition.

The Puerto Riceño public is not going to like this. Also, it is the Puerto Riceño public who will vote on it...not some cooked pendejo…will decides for themselves.
