(CNN) Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Sunday that Marines videotaped urinating on dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan made a "dumb" mistake, but should not face criminal prosecution.
In an interview Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," the Republican presidential candidate said the Obama administration over-reacted to the incident by talking about possible criminal charges and speaking with what he called "disdain" about the U.S. military.
According to Perry, famous military figures including U.S. Gen. George Patton acted similarly in a war environment.
"When you're 18 or 19, you do dumb things. These kids made a mistake, there's not any doubt about it," Perry told CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley.
Perry said the Marines involved should be reprimanded and "appropriately punished," but added that "the idea that this administration would go after these young people for a criminal act, I think it is over the top."
However, Republican Sen. John McCain, who has endorsed Mitt Romney for president, said Sunday he has no problems with the current administration's handling of the incident.
"A full and complete investigation is entirely appropriate," the former 2008 GOP presidential nominee said on CNN's "State of the Union."

My cell phone rang. "Unknown" said the caller ID.
Thought about letting it pass, but I answered it.

Good on Perry.
McCain and all these other former soldiers like Jessica Lynch who go on the MSM and snitch/spit on these marines should drop dead.
Thanks!
This tempest in a teapot happened last spring or so. These pictures are released now so our returning soldiers can get a return from Vietnam style welcome, perhaps with urine and feces thrown at our marines for good measure.
Human rights activist, Pamela Geller, explains it: Tinkle Timing
McCain stood in the well on the Senate floor after Obama pulled out the last large contingent of U.S. troops in Iraq and said, something to the effect that words could not describe what an awful thing Obama had done. McCain! The GOP candidate that couldn’t say a bad thing about Obama when he ran against him for the presidency, and stuck us with this socialist. McCain! The Senator from Arizona who has endorsed Mitt Romney because Mitt campaigned for him after their bruising 2008 primary battle. McCain! The politician the MSM love until he’s the nominee (like Romney). McCain! The politician who understands that to stay in office you learn how to play party politics.
Perry’s right on this one.
My only problem is that our troops should be smart enough to know better than to film this sort of thing.
I do not support filming it and posting it on line.
Come on Marines! Use your heads! What were you thinking?
"Let's post this on-line! What bad could possibly happen?"
SHEESH! 8^p
This is the same Pamela Geller who has lied about Rick Perry and "a pro-Sharia curriculum."
The Marine perps will be discharged and not honorably. The chain of command up to bn level will have to resign. And our good Marines will still have to follow the insame rules of engagement while wearing big targets pasted on their backs.
From what I read of Pam Geller, Rick Perry tried to cover it up, but Pam Geller got the screen shots before Mr. Perry could do so.
Whoever recorded the video should be taken out and have the crap beat out of them.
And whoever instituted the policy allowing the use of recording devices in a theater of war should be next.
As Pogo said “we have met the enemy and he is us”. I’ll reserve judgement until we know how this video came to be made public, but I’m betting it wasn’t CBS News.
All one has to do to determine the character of Mccain is to look at his daughter.
The pig didn’t wander far from the sty.
And Mccain, you are a complete disgrace. I will always believe you purposefully threw the election. You are a seething maggot. May your testicles rot off.
They should just say it was “Performance Art”, and the video was intended to accompany their application for an NEA grant. They’d go from villains to heroes of the left overnight!
CW, that was an extra great story!
Even though these days look dark for Perry’s chances, sometimes the good guys win and Rick Perry definately stands amoung the good guys.
