No, gold and silver was not like second money, or second value during SHTF, it was not even worth like in normal times, and in most of the cases it was dangerous to have it a lot (actually it was too dangerous to have anything in great amounts and let other people to know that) If you had for example 1000 gold coins, and let s say that one coin worth 150 USD in normal times, you could think that you are rich in shtf.
But in reality it was hard to find someone who give you some food or battery or whatever useful for one coin. Gold coin was not useful for 90 percent of people, what they could use it for? Eat it? Start fire with that?

I guess I can’t help but think of the California Gold Rush which create more wealth for those selling the miners their equipment and supplies than 99% of the miners themselves ever saw.
where?
Silver bullets are only good for werewolves and I don’t know what the hell gold bullets are good for. Lead, Copper, brass - they’re the new currency in the SHTF world of America-to-come.
Where do you get body armor for civilians at a good price?
Bulletproofme.com. I got a refurbished kevlar cop vest for very, very cheap, and it seems like new to me.
I concur. My bulletproofme.com experience was 5 out of 5 stars.
How do you know it works? Have you tested it?
That's not something you want to find out at the wrong time...
“Hedge in all directions.”
Sounds sort of like the Marines in Frozen Chosin, Korea.
“We have them right where we want them—we can attack in all directions!”
Gracias, mucho.
That one deserves its own thread, if it hasn’t been posted already. I will look in a minute.
It seems whenever I start to thinking “aren’t you being a little bit paranoid” to myself, I come across a news item like that.
Danke.
As quoted by JWR in Survivors.
I haven’t shot the exact refurbished vest I bought from BPM.com, but I’ve shot other “sample” kevlar swatches of similar quality and layers etc.
My own factory 9mm hps don’t make much of a divot. That’s good enough for me. I could shoot my BPM.com vest in a low corner, but I don’t feel like I need to. I have faith in their quality.
I don’t have a “plate carrier” for rifle-proof hard plates. I feel like concealed soft BA is the better value. What you want is for the bad guy/robber to shoot you with a pistol, and only then find out (when you turn and blow his brains out) that you were “bullet proof.”
If you walk around with a rifle plate carrier visible, a bushwacking sniper will just aim for your brain housing unit....
Hard armor is for soldiers who are ordered to attend a firefight with enemy riflemen.
If you would post it (If it hasn’t been), I would be grateful. I am always leery of posting articles, because I don’t know the ins and outs of what to post and where, and there’s always someone who rants about blogs (I don’t even know what isn’t a BLOG by the dictionary definition anymore).
And I agree with you:
“It seems whenever I start to thinking arent you being a little bit paranoid to myself, I come across a news item like that.”
I wanted to believe that the people in Government aren’t malevolent, and that they were just dumb, but now I know differently. The politicians, yes, they are stupid. The handlers and mystery people writing these bills and such, they arenot stupid. There is a real and a forceful attack on all freedom, and it’s not the kind that can be put off addressing for long. It’s coming to a head, and fast. Things that took decades to implement, moved to years, then weeks, not it’s nary a day that goes by. It’s heating up, and I hate that it is, but can’t ignore it any longer, its in the face, everywhere.
I agree with some of the other posters that gold doesn't seem realistic for living in SHTF. To preserve one's wealth I can see, but not for day to day necessities. Prepping with food and common everyday use items seems more practical.
Thank you, Kart, I hadn’t seen it, and appreciate the link!
Did you ever meet the great man?
As for Denominating it.. you buy diverse amts.
I have everything from one gram bars up to one ounce. I also have silver in small and large sizes.. as well as junk silver.
Verifying is simple.. go on amazon and buy a test kit.
I dont plan on carrying it around with me all the time.. and if I am buying something that might cost 5 bucks.. I will have that and only that amt of silver on me at that time.
Also a bit of research on gold and weights and karats helps as well..
REFERENCE NUMBERS
1 troy oz = 31.10347 grams
1 av oz = 28.34952 grams
1 gram = 0.03215 troy oz
24k gold= total wt is pure 100% gold
18k gold = .75 x total weight is gold
14k gold =.58333 x total weight is gold
12k gold = .50 x total weight is gold
10k gold=.43667 x total weight is gold
Granted its not foolproof.. but it is a good thing to have once you have everything else in place.
That said.. I have enough of the other barter items so whatever becomes important for barter, I will have most of my bases covered.
