I guess I can’t help but think of the California Gold Rush which create more wealth for those selling the miners their equipment and supplies than 99% of the miners themselves ever saw.

Thanks for the ping!

I agree with some of the other posters that gold doesn't seem realistic for living in SHTF. To preserve one's wealth I can see, but not for day to day necessities. Prepping with food and common everyday use items seems more practical.
