VIDEO: Secret mission: the Horse Soldiers of 9/11
The Daily Caller ^ | October 14, 2011 | Alex Quade

It was the news the world breathlessly waited for immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks: a report of the first American troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

All at once the world’s attention focused on an iconic photo of those Special Operations Forces doing something no American military had done in nearly a century: They rode horses into combat.

Their secret mission: secure northern Afghanistan by advising the warring tribal factions that formed the Northern Alliance. During the 2011 Veterans Day Parade on November 11, a new monument to these men — and to all Americans in uniform — will make its way down New York City’s famed Fifth Avenue on the way to its final home, a stone’s throw from Ground Zero.

We are fighting in a third world country that’s living in a 6th century mentality. Trying to bring them democracy really makes sense./sarc

Ummmm.....they were spotters for US ground attack aircraft. We have to be careful or the Democrats will try to take away tanks and replace them with horses. Then, they’ll take away the planes and issue eagles. The Navy will have to get rid of all ships and ride tuna.

I vaguely recall reading that the last US Army use of horses for battle
was when the Japanese invaded the Philippines during WWII.

That would put it around 70 years, not in nearly a century:, imho.

Did Lincoln say "in nearly a century" at Gettysburg? No, he said "Four score and seven"...
