Get ready, America. This upcoming July 4 is about more than simply celebrating our nations founding. Apparently, its also an opportunity for Atheists to set the record straight about their patriotism.
Thus, on Monday, people in 27 states will have the opportunity to look up in the sky and see airplanes flying banners that proudly say God-LESS America or Atheism is Patriotic. The campaign, being organized by the New Jersey-based American Atheists, is sure to stoke the fires of controversy.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!
O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!
“But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.” — Thomas Jefferson
Go, get ‘em, my friend. :-)
By what leap of logic does atheism make one patriotic? Oh, wait, I applied the word logic to lefty fools.
ROTFL! No. Atheism is dumb! Don't try to shove that commie crap down my throat. I'm not buying it.
I think that was probably hyperbole seeing that the likelihood of having a SAM handy is probably close to zero. Some of us are just frustrated that atheists and muslims seem to have more rights these days than Christians.
Idiots.
When he wrote that, Jefferson's idea of a "creator" was likely quite a bit different from yours. That line was also based on George Mason's earlier Virginia Declaration of Rights, which states that rights are "inherent" by nature, not that they are granted by any creator.
So ... why don’t we all just pitch in and hire a bunch of sky-writing planes to write GOD BLESS AMERICA about 1000 times larger than their little banners.
They are lucky that they live in a predominately Christian country.
“Atheism is Patriotic.
Comparatively:
“Black People are Homosexual.”
“Ducks are Dinosaurs.”
“Norwegians are Americans.”
Everybody needs to have the same rights. Remember, the unconstitutional requirement for religious belief to hold an office or position of trust in some states was only overruled relatively recently in our country’s history. There was official persecution. Unfortunately, some atheists (not these ones, who are just expressing their opinions) feel some retribution is in order. That is of course just as wrong as affirmative action.
Don’t equate all atheists with anti-theists or anti-Christians. That’s as fair as equating all Christians with the Westboro Baptists.
I’m pretty spiritual, but tend to find people who wear their faith on their sleaves (in a judgemental way) distasteful. But the whole “endowed by their Creator” line in the Declaration of Independence pretty much confirms that the athiests are talking out their a$$es here.
“The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.
They’ll figure this out should one of those planes experience engine failure...
That’s true. But even though he had a different concept of “creator” as the source of the rights of man, that wouldn’t necessarily have put the concept in conflict with those who held more orthodox religious views; for example, some of those who signed off on the Declaration, or the vast majority of the Americans of his time or since then. I’m sure Jefferson had his audience in mind when he wrote.
Christianity, at its best, proclaims the equality of all people before God. Christians haven’t always practiced that, but early Christianity was very egalitarian in that regard, as were the Methodism and other Pietistic movements that flourished during Jefferson’s time.
Now, I don’t ordinarily discuss religion nor wear my religion on my sleeve, and I am very comfortable with minding my own business and letting everyone believe as he pleases. I couldn’t be an atheist, but I am more than willing to let an atheist be one. But “God-Less America” is silly, because that is never how we have understood ourselves.
The fool has said in his heart there is no God. I have met many who claim to be Atheist—but every one of them has merely chosen sin over salvation-and foolish pride over reason.
A God-less America is not the America I served seven years seven months and days as an army Medic to defend.Lincoln was a Patriot and Lincoln proclaimed “...this nation under God...”
That fifty two of fifty five of the men who signed the Constitution were active Christian members of their church. is enough for me to stand in their shadow. Washington was a Patriot and proclaimed it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God,to obey His will,to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor... “(Oct.3,1789) It doesn’t really matter what the fools do today does it?
They’re deranged idiots. Only such a person would claim to prove a negative.
I’m a thankin’ you. Splash one heathen.
