Gun manufacturers have been responding to a soaring interest from women with female-friendly 'purse pistols' in an array of trend-led colours and designs. Despite the concerns of anti-gun campaigners, there has been an 83 per cent rise in the number of women buying firearms for personal defence, and handbag-sized models are fast becoming a sought-after accessory across the U.S.
Most weapon brands now offer a 'female-friendly' range that wouldn't look out of place in a toy shop, with many offering to customise pistols with pink paintwork and Swarovski crystals.
The soaring demand for firearms for women follows the endorsement of celebrities like Rhianna, who has gun tattoos, and Angelina Jolie, who admitted to buying real versions of the props she wielded as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider.
And when Sarah Palin admitted to being a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, membership soared by 20 per cent.
Manufacturer Taurus has a range of pistols with pink mother of pearl hand grips, while TJ’s Custom Gunworks will embellish weapons with the Hello Kitty logo. Sig Sauer, which supplies the US military, also offers several designs, including the P238 Lady, which boasts scroll engraving, gold flower inlay, and a rosewood grip....

Though I will admit to carrying it in a pink pistol case.
Now, I'm not saying I'd turn down a pink-duracoated Glock...

When I went to check out small pistols shortly after the ‘08 election a young woman came in asking for a pistol with pink trim — she was shown, and subsequently purchased, a Smith & Wesson with pink handle. She seemed quite pleased.
But I’m with you —not sure I want any possibility of a gun being mistaken for a toy......
I'll admit the colors catch my eye, but looks aren't what counts in a gun. I had a really pretty Ladysmith with rosewood grips. Kicked like a Georgia mule. I couldn't stand to shoot it (it doesn't help when you have a little arthritis in the hands). I finally traded it in for something more useful.
If they want to go all out...they can produce various colors of ammo; smiley faces and such.

I could go for a Thompson Center Arms “Contender” with the stock done up in those layered exotic woods and the metal parts in a deep forest green.
I guess it comes from decades of painting science fiction miniatures.
My opinion...Guns should look like guns, not toys. I don’t at all appreciate the mixture of a weapon and Hello Kitty.
Rather than stylishness, I wonder if there could be a major ergonomic redesign of guns for women. That is, working off the average female body, muscle and bone type, to create a gun that would feel and operate better for a woman?
While guns *seem* to be wholly utilitarian, in truth, a lot of its design is to fit a man’s hand, shooting stance, etc. And it is not the best design for that purpose. For example, if you see actors firing guns sideways, stupidly, on TV and in the movies, they do so because it *feels* better, even if they wouldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with a typical gun doing so.
The reason for this is known to martial artists. If you stand up, and hold your fists at your sides in a horse stance, your fists are palm up. But as you extend a fist forward, your muscles want your arm to *rotate*, first so that your palms are pointed inward, where you would typically hold a gun.
And then, as you extend your fists further, your fist continues to rotate, so that your palm is facing down, and your fist is positioned to say, punch someone in the nose. But if you are holding a gun, you would be firing sideways.
So if you did most of your shooting while your arms are fully extended, a handgun has the wrong design. While the handle and trigger would be the same, the gun itself should tilt 90 degrees to the right, if you are right handed. Which would look very odd, indeed.
But if that basic ergonomics has evaded gun design for men, imagine how much redesign is needed for an optimal gun for women?

I wonder, with a 3in barrel .45 acp, would smily faces (bright yelloow with black grin) on the ball ammo peeking from down the barrel put a perp off? ... I’ve seen flat nosed bullets that would make nice flats for faces. I would think at least a .45 diameter would be called for.

My Canadian GF’s mom is a liberal....but when she heads down here to America, she goes nuts at the firing range in NV. Better than sex she says (like I wanted to hear that..ugh)
laws are already in the process or on the books to make them illegal tooo... i think NYC banned them already
