What Is The Best U.S. State To Move To Insulate Yourself From The Coming Economic Meltdown?

snip

As the economy continues to crumble and as millions of Americans find it nearly impossible to find a good job, many of them have been wondering if things are any better in other parts of the country. And without a doubt, some areas of the U.S. are complete and total disaster zones at this point. For example, so many houses have been abandoned in Detroit that the mayor has proposed bulldozing one-fourth of the city. In Las Vegas, it was estimated that approximately 65 percent of all homes with a mortgage were "underwater" at the height of the housing crash. The number of people unemployed in the state of California is approximately equal to the populations of Nevada, New Hampshire and Vermont combined.

Yeah I’m staying here in Michigan where we’re used to hardship.

Maybe your new government will be able to turn things around there. Us ex-Michiganders are proud of what you did up there on November 3rd. Have lifelong diehard Democratic relatives in Michigan that voted straight ticket Republican. First time they ever did.

North central Missouri.

An Italian customer of mine cashed in his Kalifornian chips and did just that. Said his new neighborhood was near a lake and the neighbors were mostly descendants of immigrant Germans who will do just fine. Think he was going to central Missouri though. Oddly enough, even wanted to know if you could remove your own finger prints. Said the connected insiders all knew a world of hurt was coming our way. That was about 2 years ago.

We have 11 acres in East Texas, though as we both work for the federal government, I suspect we’ll probably end up near San Antonio.

Texas Hill Country !

The landscape reminds me of Ronald Reagans ranch near Santa Barbara.

If you go toward the coast up there...there's nothin'.

When driving up the 5, north of Mount Shasta, there is nobody. Then as soon as you cross the border with Oregon, civilization ! Probably has something to do with sales taxes :>

When Californians move to Texas, they make both states more liberal.

Now that is funny. A Californian Conservative is still a Texas Liberal ! Hey, at least this Kalifornian has a gun now !

“Funny thing is that most of the entitlement crowd would end up dying in the cities while rioting or waiting for rescue. A lot of urbanites have a fear of flyover country anyway so if they leave the cities, most would stick to the highways.”

Very good points, both of them.

I believe the places that will have the best chance for survival will have several characteristics:
- They will be a considerable distance from major highways (interstates). Figure at least 40-50 miles from the nearest interstate highway.
- They will be a considerable distance from major, or even modest, cities. By “modest” cities, I mean cities that are large enough to have “suburbs” around them.
- They will consist not only of rural areas, but small towns (and possibly “very small” cities). Isolated small towns of “non-diverse” residents may offer the best chances, as I believe there will remain enough sense of “community” and “tradition” amongst the citizens that they will be able to effectively organize to protect each other against “intruders”.

The absolute _worst_ places to be will be ANYwhere there are large cities chock full of “benefits consumers” and illegals. Simply being in the suburbs won’t help because regardless of how well-prepared a few may be, they won’t be able to “resist the hungry hordes”, so to speak.

Although the old Boy Scout motto comes to mind, I sense that the best chance of survival in the event of a real and total collapse will depend less on how well-prepared you are, and more on simply “where you happen to be”.

In the apocalypse, location will become destiny.

As Stronbow pointed out, Alaska will not be a place to head to if civilization is interrupted. The carrying capacity of the land here is very limited and gets worse as you head north. Southcentral ALaska does not the enough game to support the present population, the growing season is short, and what will grow is limited. Southeast is a better bet, you’ll want to live by the ocean and be prepared to eat a lot of seafood and kelp.
Keep in mind that while the Inuits were scraping by, eating sled dogs and leaving their firstborn children on the ice, the SE AK folks, Tglinkit/Haida/Tsimian were creating art and culture.
And knowledge will be better than stuff. Stuff can be taken away from you.If you can find the Foxfire books, grab them, read them, absorb the info. The info will be more usefull than a year’s supply of canned spam.

We can so nothing. I tried to warn everybody beginning in 2006. But nobody would listen. Went to major organic food stores locally. The staffs refused to listen. My emails to corporate officers went unanswered. All these people may be unemployed by next year.

HR 875 passed. Now there are two bills poised to pass in the Senate. Do your own research on supporters of this legislation. There are 8 RINOs supporting the bill as cosponsors.

Therefore -- absent a full blown miracle -- home gardens will be illegal by January 1, 2011. Also all vitamins, organic food and food supplements will outlawed by these Senate Bills. By this time next year hundreds if thousands of Americans will be out of work due to this VERY BAD legislation.

Monsanto will get richer. Soros will get richer. Small farms will be declared illegal businesses. And perhaps a million more will be out of work. Then over the next ten years our population may be slowly starving from malnutrition.

In my view, the Members of Congress and the Senate who vote for this legislation are nothing but traitors. They sold out America for campaign cash. They deserve to be tried for treason and locked away for 50 years.

Right you are.

Though . . . They are worse than traitors.

They are as bad as the head gestapo in the death camps.

I couldn't agree with you more. If people are looking to leave distressed places, they should probably avoid Idaho. We don't like out-of-staters (especially those from “Cali”) coming up here and bringing their stuff with them.

Idaho (especially the panhandle) has snow, the roads freeze, and wolves, bears, and other dangerous animals, lurk in the woods. Sporting goods stores sell real guns, hunting/fishing stuff and outdoor equipment, not tennis & jogging outfits. We all drive gas- guzzling pickups, and use our gun racks for their intended purpose.

People should find another state. We like Idaho just like it is

Yes that is the chief concern, but family obligations makes it critical to prep in place.

Not even sure most of those hoodrats know where my town is or how to get here. But they can smell wood burning as well as anyone else, so in the winter using wood (while critical) will be a big marker of where potential resources are for these predators.

The problem is many of us can’t SELL our homes to get to those great states. Mine has been on the market for a year and a half. :(

In a couple of years, I’m going to be your neighbor down there (getting out of PA!). I’ll look you up and we can commiserate together on how horrible the region is and how people would be crazy to move there.

I’m working to get there myself. Putnam county area, Unionville, right on the Missouri/Iowa border. 3 hours from any major city, 1+ hour from any four lane highway. Wood, water, abundant game, good soil to raise a garden, low population, easy to hide, fairly easy to survive, tough enough winters to not attract a crowd.

I don’t think the state matters as much as whether you are in the city or out in the country and how prepared you are as an individual.
