Poor taste? Well that’s the understatement of the year.

Bob Jones University, known for its strict adherence to Christian doctrine, has seriously missed the mark on this one. In an attempt to easily identify freshman on campus, Bob Jones University has passed out “1st BJ” buttons in hopes that professors and upperclassmen alike will extend grace to those scrambling to get to class, or wandering around completely lost during their first week.

I'd say that "Poor taste" comment was in equally poor taste (meaning not at all inappropriate but it can be taken wrong). I'm not willing to agree that an innocent comment that can be interpreted differently is in poor taste. Bob Jones simply abbreviated their name, much as UCLA, BSU, NYU, and UVA do.

Why not simply a smiley face button to all Freshmen? Or something else?

This violates my first rule of sloganeering. Always bring in a 10 year old boy to read your slogan. If he laughs, start over.
