Either our nation's obesity problem is just as bad as they say, or Costco knows something we don't, because the aircraft carrier-scaled big box store is now offering enough (horrifying) food to last you a year for a cool $800.
The monstrous, 5,011 serving package, courtesy of food outfitter Shelf Reliance (hey, at least we'll have kept our senses of humor during doomsday!) claims their end days buffet contains "only top-of-the-line products," "developed with everyday menu planning in mind." Which makes sense, of course, because the only thing worse than knowing that the entire eastern seaboard has been leveled by nukes or a horde of flesh-feasting space titans is repetitive bunker faredehydrated fish skin AGAIN, mom?
Possibly more disconcerting than the notion of a year underground eating food from Costco is the fact that the package isn't just marketed for emergencies, but for "long-term food storage supply." Meaning that someone, somewhere, thinks it's a rational idea to buy an $800 cargo crate including containing 84 gallon-sized cans, to just, y'know, save yourself a trip to the grocery store. Now, I am totally down with Costco's cheese platters, and pasta multi-packs, but. My God.

I don’t even play an Electrical Engineer on TV (though there are dozens in the building I work in), and I didn’t stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I believe what SonsofCollins wrote is generally correct.
Cars may not all be dead, depending on which way they are oriented relative to the EMP source. There MAY also be a phenomenon that keeps the pulse from penetrating the gap between, for example the hood and the fenders, depending on the ratio of the size of the gap to the wavelength of the pulse.
Generally, it’s my understanding that conductors that are long relative to their cross-section tend to be more vulnerable; this would include both conductors on integrated circuits and long-distance power transmission lines.
Commercial aircraft, ironically, MAY be less susceptible, since they are designed to be resistant to lightning strikes, but if there is no way to navigate them or fuel them, that doesn’t do a whole lot of good.
I use a mandolin or food frocessor which ever works the best for what I want and it makes quick work of most veggies and fruits. On apples I bought an old fashioned apple pealer that cores and slices so all you need to do with that is a cut down the center and load the trays. My hubby usually helps because he thinks it’s fun *rolleyes* and I’ll take all of the help I can get.I use it now for things on sale...for example I bought about 30# of asparagus back in the spring when it was offered for .98¢ a pound, washed, trimmed the stalks, and loaded the trays. Now I have all the asparagus I ever want for use during the winter and all it takes is a soak in boiling water and then into the recipe.Saves me a lot of money,I know what is in it, and someday may keep us alive if worse came to worst.
I have no found anything yet that I could not dehydrate nd have it come back just the way it should.I’d say that people who are having trouble are either using a cheap dehydrator or are drying way too log.

Sounds like a bargain. If you are in Las Vagas,Is there is no extra charge if the cops kill you.
My Dr in Columbus has made sure that I have a year’s worth of insulin on hand a head. She told me she wanted none of her diabetics to be without that.If the power goes off it goes to the basement where it stays uder 70fº all of the time and never freezes.I think I am going to ask her for a new script for syringes.I use a pump but in the case of an EMP attack it would take that out I’m sure and I would need more.Syringes as most diabetics know can be used more than once.I do have some on hand now but no reason not to have more. The other meds I use could be done without and I’d be fine so that is the only one that is life or death.
Thanks ... interesting - a little scary, but interesting.
“... will some of our stuff be so ruined we’ll have to replace it rather than just get it up and running?”
The size [area]/intensity of the EMP is the most critical.
Most ANYTHING/EVERYTHING in a homeoffice/any non-FaradayCage structure will be toast unless it is in Faraday cage structure at the time of the event.
As for replacements, that will be mute.
Electronic devices do not go out “some” - it’s either OK or dead.
If the “large++ event” occurs there will be no replacements for you or anyone else -what happens at your place will occur in all the others too.
And unless you have a generator that did not fry and you have the fuel to drive it, then where will you get electricity or fuel.
I suggested reading “One Second After” to get a vivid sense of what the situation will be like for several years to come.
Hollywood has done a VERY poor job of accurately describing the aftermath but their “best job so far” is the TV series “Jericho” which you can purchase or get from your local library.
FYI, I’ve been researching this matter for 5+ years and had been in preparation for writing a book on the technical aspects in deep detail.
OSAfter book has the “gory details and some technicals” down well enough.
I have since pull off the project for more pressing and immediate concerns.
Will you have a chapter on things families can do to prepare - keep a radio and some ‘spare’ parts for (?) in an old microwave oven in the garage... etc. Or things a small city could do? Or a medium size one? Part of what people want is to feel they have some control...
Probably the most useful ideas in the project are for small-medium cities/towns could do.
But ultimately it will be what the families/collective groups of like-minded folks do for theirself that will be the most telling.
What the Mussies have in store for us is a conjecture but it would be assinine to ignore their stated intentions.
I love that movie. One of the best lines in the movie is when Christopher Walken is told by his son that there was never a war and he tells him not to tell his mom.
I watched it last year and they have some interesting ideas. Have you ever noticed that Michael Bane has some sort of a tic once in awhile? I got a laugh out of Michael Bane when he went to a hand gun manufacturer. Michael and the owner of the plant were talking about the hand gun and the owner accidentally pointed the gun at Michael. Michael got this pissed look on his face and grabbed the guy by the wrist and pointed the gun in another direction. I'm surprised they left that in the show.
Secondarily, this company has a great water purification system available, with some other necessaries.

Yeah... what we called a “John Wayne” opener... I still have at least one!
