Is Beck Right or Wrong About Tea Party Outfits?
The Blaze ^ | 16 Sep | Seidl

Glenn Beck is no stranger to public criticism. Usually, that criticism comes from entrenched critics. But today, Beck was chided by some of his most loyal fans. What’s got everyone so upset?

Beck’s stance on playing dress-up.

Recently, Beck started imploring Tea Party supporters to lose the costumes, and homemade signs, so as not to give detractors ammunition. ( ... )

He repeated the charge on this morning’s radio show, taking umbrage with one costume in particular: “What’s more effective, you as Betsy Ross or you as somebody who looks just like their neighbor, not dressed as Betsy Ross?”

( ... )

“I‘m not saying you can’t go dressed as Betsy Ross or the Statue of Liberty –that would be a totalitarian state … [But] if you want to truly make a difference, it is now time that the Tea Party takes the next step. … And first impressions make all the difference.”

I think we agree more than not on this.

I agree.

I think we will still have both for a while. Rallies and protests and then campaigns that reflect the particular political races the candidates are in.

Absolutely, rallies and protests are very important and still are...The campaigns, wins, office holders and ideological shifts are the goal. Protest for protest sake isn't - that's what the left does.

The former will die down when they are no longer needed. I don’t see the utility in trying to micromanage an organic, grassroots movement. That is asking for trouble, I think.

The rallies and protests will necessarily die down as the message is being heard and acted upon. The underlining message is 'listen to "we the people" or we shall take to the streets again''you work for us.' Beck did make a micromanagement suggestion, and it created a fight in the ranks. It did ask for trouble, as this thread has witnessed. He has grasped the leadership of the movement in some peoples eyes - but he's not. He most likely thought out loud or he could have aspirations of being a figurehead. He's not my leader, I am.

The tea party protesters of old wore the attire of the day, so should today’s tea party protesters.

Nauti.... I agree!

The costumes remind us of our history & connection to the Founders....and the signs convey our message!

The current TEA PARTY was formed to protest against the current regime’s policy of forcing its progressive solialist policies on ‘We The People’.

The historic Boston Harbor TEA PARTY was formed to protest against the British King’s tyranical treatment and taxation without representation of ‘We The People’.

Who is he anyway but a johnny come lately? He is NOT the leader of the Tea Party Movement, except maybe in his own mind.

I don't want to argue for or against Beck. I appreciate his courage to stand up for the country and attempt to bring people together by illuminating historical facts that have been buried. I respect him for getting over, what, 600,000 patriots off their couches and to D.C. for a day of inspirational speeches.

I don't really expect him to regurgitate strategy, run a political campaign, etc.... He had an opinion about the costumes, and I have to respect his freedom to express it. We can disagree, and to a certain extent, I do; but, what he said hardly is a call to arms against him.

I don't expect him to run a political campaign or party, so I can't participate in bashing him for his inability to do something that he's not trying to do?????

He is that investigative journalist that we've been looking for as the MSM went belly up. I can judge him on that, I suppose if I'm feeling judgmental. He does a good job of digging and seems fairly fearless in putting things out there. Do I wish he weren't the only investigative journalist out there with a high profile right now, yes I do.

If protest crowds are NOT displaying their ideas for all to see, they are even more vulnerable to the liars on the Left painting them however they want with impunity.

Great point! If the GOP wants to 'rent a crowd' let them pay for it with their own money. The Tea Party stands on their own...

Always keep in mind that the unions, particularly the printer's unions, are tightly allied with the Democrat party.

That bond is so tight that if the Democrats want to make up a handmade sign to send out some goon to fake a TEA Party attendee somewhere it will have to be PRINTED IN A UNION SHOP.

If you catch my drift you'll notice that the Democrats have to have their Handmade Amateur Signs PRINTED IN A UNION SHOP.

That's why we've actually had Democrats saying "Hey, looky here, a racist sign" showing one of their SEIU goons holding a machine printed sign!

The handmade signs have to stay!

The Tea Party is a true grassroots, uprising of everyday Americans all over this country.

They are dressing up to pronounce their feelings and their ties to our forebearers. And their votes, in huge numbers to overcome the fraud existing in many place, are counting.

Trying to tell them what to do in this instance is like spitting into the wind. And they will have their impact irregardless.

Signs are a definite, costumes are okay so long as they do not get out of hand. Some are close but you can see the patriotism behind them.

I can understand Beck’s concern. The media couldn’t find a sign or costume to ridicule his rally.

But the Tea Party has been using patriotic signs and costumes since it started and we only keep gaining strength.

Beck & the Tea Party have two distinct missions and messages.

I find it highly ironic that Beck, whose clothing, (white shirt and tie required at church meetings, required special underwear) is dictated by his religion, is now trying to dictate what other people wear.

Ouch!

I think it breaks down along age and employment...

Younger, more likely to be unemployed people, should counter the Che t-shirts with Jefferson t-shirts...Show the the other young ens that its ok to take a conservative stand. Besides, its their future they've got to lose.

And a good mix of both is important.

Because we're Americans and we should be free to make our voices heard, it makes no sense for us to self-impose censorship, unless that gives greater voice to the cause somehow.

Beck's point was understandable...He wanted people to be able to identify with the audience they saw. Fundamentally, I agree with that.

But you can do that very well with signs, t-shirts...

Besides, our crowd doesn't look like the crowd of hippie freaks you see at lefty protests...

But I do think it would be funny if we all wore a nice suit and tie or a nice dress...each with a rifle on our back. But, hey, that's my fantasy.

“Just my experience. I thought one “Betsy Ross” conveyed more than a thousand words, to those at the rally and anyone who saw her pic”

Very well stated! I think you’re right - these costumes illustrate concepts and ideas in a succint way. There was a Ben Franklin at our local tea party, and his image brought to mind the wisdom and the character of our founders. As you said, a picture really is worth a thousand words!

I can’t imagine people on the left trying to establish a dress code for their supporters or worrying about what people on the right might say. News flash - the MSM and the libs don’t like us. And they won’t like us more if we dress like they do or if we pattern our lives after them. If the MSM can’t find a picture of dorky right wingers they’ll find something else to write about - and it won’t be flattering.

This supposedly got started with Beck et al. saying the Tea Party had to start appearing less "extreme," i.e. kooky, crazy, etc., in order to attract . . . who?

As Rick Santelli says so well in this vid today (you have to listen to the end), what everyone is missing is that the Tea Party IS the new middle.

It doesn't have to change to attract the "middle," it IS the middle.

I saw some young boys in colonial garb and tricorner hats running through the crowd at a tea party rally and generally acting like young boys do. It really touched me thinking, not that long ago, young boys just like that took up arms with their fathers and fought the best Army in the world for their freedom. And they won.

God bless those Patriots and the America they fought and died for!
