His job is to enforce the law that’s on the books, not pick and choose which ones his likes....

What a great example he’s setting....

So he picks and chooses which laws to enforce. That will go over really well with the voters.

More evidence that the US is no longer a nation of laws. We have laws on the books, but society’s elites pick and choose what they enforce.

He took an oath to enforce the laws of the State. It’s not like a menu from the neighborhood Chinese eatery where you choose one from column A, one from B and one from C. Mr. High Sheriff needs to understand it’s package deal.

I don’t know how it is in Arizona, but here in Florida the sheriff is not a county official, but rather a state official. He or she answers to the governor, not the county commission.

In Florida it would be up to the governor to insist he enforce the laws of the state, all of them, or face removal from his position.

I say hooray for the State of Arizona! They have certainly taken a situation for which they could get no satisfaction and turned it into a national discussion. Good for them!

If he’s unwilling to follow this law, what others would he ignore? Such a man is a disgrace to the badge.

No kidding.

I am so glad that a bunch of damn illegal aliens and other lawless idiots are picking and choosing which laws to obey.

Inspires a lot of confidence in Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, @sshole extraordinaire.

The Sheriff out there is elected, no? I’m not sure since I never lived out that way. They are elected here and in CA where I’m from. All the more reason to get out the vote, if so.

“Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik calls Senate Bill 1070 a “stupid law” that will force officers to start profiling”

I haven’t read the whole law, but does it say anything about profiling? If not, then how would it “force” the police to start profiling? I was under the impression that the officer had to have “reason to believe” the suspect is in Arizona illegally.

It seems to me that the problem is just procedural. If the Sheriff is uncomfortable with questioning people solely based on race, why not just instruct his officers to have additional compelling reasons.

From what I've heard, the law forbids profiling. It requires that anyone who is arrested must, before being released, provide evidence of legal residence.

Pima County—home to Tucson—is on the border where official corruption is not unheard of.

>>He should immediately lose his job...<<

Yep. His job is to enforce the law, not interpret which ones are “good” or “stupid”. Don’t get me wrong, he can “just do a poor job” enforcing the laws he disagrees with, but once he publicly states such a position he has crossed a line.

The law has a provision that allows anyone to sue law enforcement if they dont enforce the law. You can not catch and release period!

Our Sheriffs are elected and have a good amount of power but the law was made to punish exactly this kind of behavior, in fact I would guess that they had this guy in mind when they wrote it.

Cant wait to see the first protest march in August in the 118 deg heat.
