The sad decline of music: Cole Porter vs. The Beatles
http://wmbriggs.com/blog/?p=767 ^ | William Briggs

Paul McCartney has once again crept upon our shores. He was, of course, vanguard in the original “British Invasion”, which occurred in early 1964. Now, an invasion is something to be resisted, to be fought off, to be repelled. Sadly—quite, quite sadly—we had no Winston Churchill on our shores to boost our morale with stirring words like these:

'We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in New York, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Culture, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender";

and so the invasion was a success, our surrender quick, our cultural defeat total. All that is left is rebellion.

Here is the first of many examples of what appeasement and acquiescence has wrought. Try not to sit too close to your screen when reading the ride-hand column. There is a danger of, what they call on the professional eating circuit, a reversal...

I saw a double post. Sorry I didn’t bother to notice the 4 characters that were different.

Any way, back to topic: why would anyone that doesn’t like the Beatles see the Cirque show? I wouldn’t expect anyone that doesn’t like Zappa to watch 200 Motels.

Zappa was a great artist but had a narrow following . Susey Creamcheese was darling . It doesn’t hurt when I pee, but the Beatles were the icons of the 60’s ( although I liked the Stones attitude better )

I would easily put Zappa in the list of the 20 best guitar players. Maybe not in the top ten, but for sure in the top 20.

I think with Zappa, alot of his stuff is intentionally unaccessable.

He pushed the limits of different things you could do with an instrument just to try it and see what happened. Same deal with his compositions.

He had a doctorate in music. Another one with a PHD in music is Elvis Costello, and his stuff isn’t exactly mainstream either!

One of my faves is Zappa doing “Stairway to Heaven”
The dogs barking in the background always make me bust a gut!

Don’t care about icons. The question is: why would a person who doesn’t like the Beatles go see the Cirque Beatles show? Think about it. If you don’t like punk rock are you going to watch Repoman? No. If you don’t like Rogers and Hammerstein or Julie Andrews are you going to watch Sound of Music? No. Any that doesn’t like the Beatles has no conceivable reason to go see Love, because they already know they’re gonna hate every sound they hear during the show.

It’s all about the horn section doing the Stairway guitar solo note for note. That just killed me the first time I heard, all anticipating a great FZ solo that would make Jimmy Page cry for his inadequacies and then BAM it’s all horns.

A lot of Zappa is definitely from the “I wonder what this will do” school of composition.

Stairway to Heaven.

Check out Tiny Tim and Brave Combo doing a swing version, also on the album, a chachacha version of Hey, Jude.

Porter vs mccarney:

Sometimes I like to drive my highway cruizer and sometimes I like to drive my two seat sports car. Different music has different purposes.

A friend of mine has a collection of Stairway covers, some of them are pretty good. I’ve got two different collections of Louie, Louie covers, some of them you can even understand the lyrics.

Sounds fair to me.

Personally, I find the music of the time either completely passion-less or highly evidenced of a repressed-passion.

Sort of like when a consultant takes 60 words to tell me something that can be said in 10 words.
I start to wonder if he’s hiding something.

Well, with Porter, we know (wink wink, nudge nudge).

Yeah, his Lado Earth guitar will set you back a few thousand if you haven’t already bought one.
