February 12, 2008 Great Depression Predictions may be too Sanguine by MrArbitrage

If – we look at history – and obviously our Hussein and Congress do not – but if we did – we would see how the same actions now being taken by our government turned a recession into a “Great Depression”. I’ve got news for you – expecting history to repeat itself here might actually prove to be far too sanguine. That’s because...

The entitlements established as a part of the New Deal, the very entitlements and bureaucracies that are now crippling us and are about to implode are still here. We cannot afford the OLD ones – but now that the radical left of this country are ADDING to the old ones, the proverbial camel’s back WILL be broken. The ONLY way we could mathematically support the old bureaucracies and entitlement plans + the new programs to come - is by turning to what is called Higher Communism. It would be more appropriately titled “The Great Abyss” - into which there is no bottom.

Right on the money.

As I’ve been saying repeatedly here on FR for the past 100 days, WE ARE NOT SIMPLY IN A CYCLE. No, things aren’t going to return to “normal.” WAKE UP - all things have changed - nothing is the same.

I wonder what Obama thinks about a segment of America clearing shelves of ammo since his election.

Sounds great! Are you looking for a tenant?

I'm with you... but I only have 25 acres. I did win a bid today on a DPMS LR308AP4 Carbine 7.62 NATO rifle based on an AR design. Wanted a little more thump than my AR15. A man cannot have enough ammo on hand in today's market... it gets harder to find at a reasonable price with each passing day... another reason to despise the new muzzie in Chief!

Letter to The Wall Street Journal A response to Andrew Wilson's op-ed "Five Myths About the Great Depression." By Donald J. Boudreaux Business & Media Institute 11/4/2008 9:02:11 AM To the Editor: Andrew Wilson is right: the New Deal did not end the Great Depression ("Five Myths About the Great Depression," November 4). No less an authority than FDR's Treasury secretary and close friend, Henry Morganthau, conceded this fact to Congressional Democrats in May 1939: "We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. And I have just one interest, and if I am wrong ... somebody else can have my job. I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises ... I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started ... And an enormous debt to boot!"* Indeed, FDR's market-suffocating policies are almost surely what put the "Great" in "Great Depression." Sincerely, Donald J. Boudreaux

There are some "rats" have no interest in saving the economy. There are other "rats" that are just too dumb to know better. Include 3 GOP senators in the latter.

25 acres could make a fine truck farm, and might suffice a family of four if its good ground.

40 acres is about all a man can farm without a tractor. I wonder how long stored gasoline will keep in a 300 gallon tank.

I do think that if it gets really bad, that it will be a matter of life and death to protect what you've got. These Obamabots will be no different than Mugabe's mobs. Lately I've found myself making a list of items that are "must haves".

You’d be surprised how much produce you can grow on just a mere 10 acres of good soil with the right equipment and climate. Even 10 acres (without a tractor) is a verrrrry big undertaking by hand farming alone.
And Yes. They WILL come... Once the govt checks start bouncing or stop showing up in the mail, they’ll get hungry very quickly. Urban areas will be last place you’ll want to be as they will be hardest hit, but the animals WILL come to the country like swarming locusts looking for food.
Keep it locked & loaded, friend.

Piney woods... deep rich black dirt... lots of springs and a creek... deer, turkey, rabbits, bob cats, coyotes etc.

With preservative, I have run gas with no problem that had been stored for ten years... had a friend that went to Palmyra Island in the Pacific and found several drums of av-gas from WWII and it ran fine in the generators that they were using... that was back in the nineties. Sealed from water and humidity it will last a long time. Many moons ago, when I was a Boy Scout... I learned... BE PREPARED!

I’m thinking of my nuclear family and perhaps a couple more as my children grow up.

Need a good supply of wood and that will take about 10 acres of timber (can run pigs in that).

Need about 5 acres for vegetable farming.

Need 20 acres for grazing livestock.

Need 20 acres for corn, wheat, etc. if there isn’t modern seed, fertilizer etc.

I’d also like to have an orchard in there somewhere, which I could probably put around my 5 acre vegetable plot (thus making it easier to protect from all forms of vermin.

What have I forgotten?
