There was an article on FR a few years ago about a California college professor that fell for the 419 scam.
He was a big critic of Ronald Reagan, citing diminshed intelligence or something like that.
After trying all the relevant key-words and also using the advanced search options on both AltaVista and Google without success, I ask Freepers if they can help.
How the heck did you do that!? I’ve been searching for 45 minutes for that.
This one?

Oops, sorry for the duplicate - the other one wasn’t there when I went searching!

To restrict the search results to this site, add -
site:freerepublic.com
- to the search terms.
Also, it helps to use quotation marks around phrases in the search terms, like -
"419 scam"
If one search engine doesn't find the right result, try another one. The Yahoo search engine found the article you were looking for. Google didn't have it.
I used the terms as you said with exception to "419 scam". I didn't put them together as one search term.
Thanks , that must have made the difference.
Man, that’s a sweet thread. I couldn’t remember seeing it then I looked at the date. I was on deployment.
Luckily, this was the one night I was able to use Google - I have terrible virus probs with my computer and haven’t been able to do much of anything, so just got lucky tonight.
I used the “advanced search” option in Google, then where it asked to restrict to which domain to search, put in “freerepublic.com” - then all I did was put in “reagan” and “419” as two words, no connectors or quote marks, and it was the first thread hit result that came up.
Google and Alta Vista showed nothing. But Yahoo did.
Louis Gottschalk fell for a 419? Oh, that’s rich. Very prominent guy in the psychiatric field. Besides his professional props, he made the news after Reagan’s Alzheimer’s announcement by saying he’d suspected for years, in particular based on Reagan’s debate performance against Mondale.
I knew Gottschalk’s wife (also a physician) years ago. Sharp, opinionated, brusque, witty, delightful lady. Passed away some time ago. I can only imagine how much he must miss her.
By his own standard, he is no where near equal to the intelligence of our great President Ronad Reagan.
I can only imagine how much he must miss her.
While I can feel for his loss, it doesn't change the fact that he was incredibly ignorant of the same forces for which he faults Reagan.
I think it might have been search term 419 that did it. ??
