McCain cuts deal with delegates to hand WV victory to Huckabee

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee enjoys the first victory on Super Tuesday for the Republicans as he takes all 18 delegates in the state of West Virginia, winning 52% of the vote, although rumors abound regarding the McCain campaign's possible instruction to their delegates to switch to his side.

Mitt Romney finished second with 47% of the vote, followed by McCain at 1%.

Rumors are circulating that the McCain campaign instructed their delegates to defect over to Mike Huckabee's side as to avoid a Romney victory. Nationally, McCain is significantly ahead of Huckabee and can afford giving the state's 18 delegates to Huckabee, but certainly not to Romney, who was originally in the lead when polling began in West Virginia by a wide margin and trails McCain nationally by only 17 delegates.

Legal or not, it's still wrong and reeks of Clintonian politics.

Miff Romney selling himself as the new Reagan is what is wrong. And it reeks...

I’m not missing anything.

Your boy got played. How is he going to face down the Chinese or the Mullahs if he gets outmaneuvered by Gomer Pyle?

Schmuckabee the spoiler is a disgrace and a severe disappointment and the RNC that has helped in this process is finished as far as I am concerned as we don’t need two damned Democrat parties.

It was clearly a winning strategy. These delegates will ultiamtely go to McCain. Romney is now clearly campaigning against both McCain and Huckabee together.

Out in the open now. There was nothing Romney could have done about it...one way or the other.

I am hoping that it backfires on McCain because it reeks of backroom deals, manipulation, and double teaming. Most conservatives will not look kindly upon it IMHO.

"if RonPaul hadn’t joined hands with McCain"

The numbers to do support that assertion. It appears the Paul vote split 50-50 once Paul was taken off the ballot.

I believe the same thing. But to Huckabee supporters, I'm the anit-christ, so...

Obviously if you don't support Huckabee, you aren't a real Christian (according to some Huck supporters).

Rush basically said today what I have believed....for a long, long time.

The "lifetime" politicians are running, and staging our elections....behind the scenes.

IMO, sadly there's very little difference between the parties....

It's either MarxistSocialist Lite...or MarxistSocialist.

Pick your poison.

Wonder who’s supplying the funds making it possible for Huck to remain in the race? Maybe McCain has the funds or maybe it’s ???

...and when HACKABEE finally pulls out of the race, he will ask his delegates to vote for McInsane.

McAmnesty cannot get the conservative vote on his own. He doesn’t deserve it.

He is a sleazeball, in my opinion. And Hackabee isn’t any better.

Well, whether you support him or not, it was clever. We don’t want an idiot as president. Good strategery.

I'm not enamored by McCain's rapier wit with this maneuver. Huckabee is the spoiler, and it doesn't take an Einstein to do a dirty deal like this.

None of these men are idiots.

But all along, both McCain and Huckabee (the “Christian”) have been denying there’s any collusion between them.

They’re both lying.

“Will the Romney people now be saying, “a vote for McCain is a vote for Huckabee”?

No matter how you look at it. Romney lost.”

When elections are handled this way, when 90% of the base detests McCAin’s policies and he still wins, WE ALL LOSE!

What part of that don’t you get?

Nothing he could have done about it in any case. The only potential positive for Romney is that it is now out in the open and happened early in the day and that conservative voters will react negatively to it.

Romney is clearly being tag teamed...and that's pure politics and part of the game. Romney will have to deal with it because it is the reality.

Excuse me? This one was dishonest as they come:

It's rare to see a candidate be as clumsily hypocritical as Mike Huckabee was yesterday. At a press conference, he complained bitterly about attack ads from the Romney campaign, and said that his campaign had prepared countering attack ads, but wasn't going to run them, because that would be wrong.

Then he proceeded to show his attack ad to the journalists, thereby ensuring that it would be seen online, talked about on the news, and spread far and wide free of charge.

Chron.com

WASHINGTON—Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks in an upcoming article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?" The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it.

Boston.com

On that one, not only did Huckabee attack, he attacked Romney's religion, which makes it a personal attack.

This delegate situation in WV is just dishonest. How can you defend that? You denigrate Reagan's name by doing so.

Huckabee hasnt claimed poverty....he’s raising funds as best he can..just raised over a million dollars since the beginning of the month. What Huckabee has stated is that he’s had success in SPITE of Romney outspending the other GOP candidates at a pace of over 20 to 1....

No one has said that Huckabee supports McCain or vice versa. They have stated their mutual respect for each other as opponents and fellow Republicans...

What this was in WV was two things.. 1. McCain knew that he would not win this state...but, he wanted to prevent Romney from doing so. 2. In order to do that, he told his supporters if it went to a 2nd ballot to support Huckabee. Paul’s few supporters did the same thing from what I’ve heard.

Look people..politics is a full contact sport. Dont like it? Find something else to do..

Team Romney people sitting here whining about it isn’t going to do much for getting support for him.

Why not look at WHY Team Romney can’t close the deal. As I listed earlier, now in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida, and now West Virginia.. Romney still couldnt win after spending MILLIONS of his own money even.
