Why Democrats Fear John McCain the Most

Sen. John McCain's victory in the South Carolina primary was huge. The importance of it should not be underestimated. After all, it was South Carolina that finished him off in 2000, when the religious right spread rumors and told lies to help their boy, George W. Bush, win the primary. It was a victory that put the swaggering little Texan on the road to the White House.

(In other words, yes, we have the religious rightists in South Carolina to blame for much of the shame and disaster that has been Bush's presidency....). It's amazing, isn't it, how awful "Christians" behave in politics? And they tried it again this year against McCain, on behalf of their new boy, Mike Huckabee.

But this time, McCain showed that he had learned his lesson. He fought openly against the new attacks, and called them what they were. His campaign didn't hesitate to lay the new attacks at Huckabee's door. This time, he would not lose.

If he follows it with another victory in Florida, he will clearly be the new front-runner. And he may be the candidate Democrats least want to face.

Here's why:

* McCain could unify the party like none of the other candidates. Republicans are a collection of "Lost Boys" right now, desperately looking for a national leader in the wake of the Bush disaster. There is no Ronald Reagan (a role McCain can't even fill), and they know they have to find the next best thing....McCain's status as veteran senator, war hero, and maverick reputation may just fit the bill better than anyone else.

* Mitt Romney is such an ultimate flip-flopper, not to mention the Mormon baggage....There's something sleazy about Rudy Giuliani when you think of him locking one of his wives out of the mayoral mansion, and his association with Bernard Kerik. Plus, he's a one note candidate, and we know what that note is: "War on terror!"

* Huckabee appeals only to the religious right, and would probably be the easiest for the Democrats to beat. I can't imagine him having a national appeal. Like George Wallace in 1968, he'd probably win a few Southern states and that would be it....(after all, how much can Ric Flair and Chuck Norris really do for you?).

* Fred Thompson is finished and always was.....(and by the way, what bad judgment former senator George Allen showed in tagging on with Thompson; get a clue, George).

So, it looks like McCain - who appeared out of it in the bad 'ole days of summer (and I admit I wrote him off, too) - is probably the front-runner right now.

Don't get me wrong...I think Democrats can beat him, too. But McCain may just be the guy who can bring a fractured party together. And that means the White House won't be a slam dunk for Democrats, but something we'll have to work hard to win.

I respectfully disagree. I think McCain would win enough conservative votes, coupled with moderate Repubs and Independents (and some dems who don’t trust Obama or Hillary) to put him well over the top.

Conservatives don’t trust him at all and they make up a significant portion of the Republican voting base.

McCainiac seems to delight in poking conservatives in the eye. He supports amnesty, more gun laws, and removing your First Amendment right of free speech. He would rather work with Kennedy than a conservative. He LIKES the attention that he gets by giving the conservative base the finger more than he likes doing what is right.

McCain does NOT support amnesty.

Do you realize that the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill actually PUNISHED the immigrants who were/are here illegally? ($2000. fine) And it required them to pay back taxes. It also provided for increased border enforcement, including funding for 300 miles of vehicle barriers, 105 camera and radar towers, and 20,000 more Border Patrol agents. Also the bill would have required an immigrant to be IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY when they apply for their green card.
Before you criticize McCain for actually trying to fix a big problem, how about reading the provisions of the bill. Check out Wikipedia, that ought to be simple enough for you.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comprehensive_Immigration_Reform_Act_of_2007
And please do not fail to understand that by NOT acting on this problem, and leaving things AS THEY ARE, all the current illegals have in effect - AMNESTY!
Give McCain some credit for actually addressing the problem - that’s a heck of a lot more than is getting done NOW!

No one has done more to undercut the Conservative agenda than John McCain and his gang of 14

I guess you’re just weak. I intend to hold out much longer than that.

So they get to commit MULTIPLE felonies (entering the country after being deported, obtaining and using illegal identification, falsification of government documents, cheating on their taxes, etc) that you or I would go to jail for, and get away with it with a paltry $2000 fine and pay taxes for only 3 of the past 5 years?

Sounds like amnesty to me.

Where can I sign up to pay $2000 and get TWO YEARS worth of taxes back?

And why should they pay three years worth of back taxes when they are fairly certain that they won’t be deported anyway?

So tell me - what is actually getting DONE to address this problem NOW??

CIR may not have been a perfect solution, but it was a STEP in the right direction.

Oh I get it, you’d rather the situation just continue to multiply & get worse than accept an imperfect solution.

At least McCain had the guts to TRY to DO something about the problem!

Democrats do not fear McCain. Edwards all but endorsed him the other day. A number of Democrats were active in contacting voters in previous primaries to cross over and vote for McCain.

If McCain/Huckabee/Rudy win, it will remove the immigration issue from the general election. Even the majority of Democrats oppose amnesty and perks for illegal aliens. Only the politicians are eager to sellout this country.

How can securing borders, identifying the illegals & prescribing fines, taxes & returninmg home to apply for a green card be the WRONG thing?

It is the wrong thing if it allows people who have committed MULTIPLE FELONIES become US citizens by paying a paltry $2000 fine.

*Snerk*.

Where *WERE* you during the FR meltdown over this bill?

It was dismembered molecule by molecule.

And yes, I lived in Phoenix during the debate over this bill.

McCain was pushing Amnesty as hard as possible at that time: it was all over the local talk shows (given Arizona's proximity to Mexico and California).

Look here and here and here, look at posts 27, 32, and 59 for starters.

Nice try, though.
