Beltway rumors are not to be taken too seriously. The one circulating now has SecState Condi Rice replacing VP Dick Cheney next year due to Cheney's bum ticker.
This of course would be a calculated political manuver to position Ms. Rice to have a clear run at the presidency.
Republicans and conservatives so fear the potential of a celebrity vote sweeping Hillary Clinton into office that they are desperate to do something. They think a black conservative female is the only political trump card that can beat former First Lady Clinton.
Current polls make Republicans nervous:
A CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll last week found that 40 percent of the Democrats polled said they would be most likely to support Clinton for president, 25 percent said they favored Sen. John Kerry and 18 percent said former Sen. John Edwards.
This celebrity phenomena cancels any logical thinking by the voters.(See California recall race, 2004).
This may not be such a bad move for the Republicans if they want to retain the White House in 2008.
The Vice-President is elected along with the President (see Article II, Section 1, Clause 1). The President can not fire the Vice-President. Cheney will be the one to decide if Cheney resigns.
I thought that was the case but being English I was not certain.
I think Cheney stays. If he has to leave, I guess I would prefer that someone who is really out front with his or her Christian values would take his place. I like Condi a lot, but I don't think she fits the bill.
All the more reason for the President to play his cards close to his vest, need_a_sceen_name.
Democrats haven't an original thought in their collective heads regarding anything right now. The need for thr President to say something. So they may ridicule it, while using that very information as the center of their strategy.
President Bush is playing a very clever and effective "Texas Hold 'Em" or "Rope A Dope" strategery with the Dems. Knowing that sooner or later, they have to say or do something (Besides raising taxes) that people will buy in on.

Exactly true. Hillary's supposed anti-illegal immigration stance was mere playing to the camera and gullible media types-- in case it hasn't been noticed, she simultaneously dances with all the pro-immigration ethnic organizations that give mucho dinero to the Dems *and* has refused to do anything concrete in her status as a legislator unlike eg Tancredo. She has no intention of doing anything to combat illegal immigration, nor any intention of reducing the unsustainably high (more than a million/year) legal immigration levels we have from chain migration. Anyone who trusts a word she says is hopelessly gullible.

Thankfully the MSM no longer has a monopoly on information in the USA anymore. The blogs are now in control and most strongly reflect the opinion of the grass roots. And as you can see from the Dem blogs, they don't like Hillary within their own party-- it's bloodsport there.

I agree. Cheney has served this nation all his life and we're fortunate to have had him serve in that respect.
However, he has said he isn't running in 2008. That leaves a vacuum. A vacuum Hillary is aiming to fill. Hillary is a hardcore socialist. Not someone who should occupy the White House.'
Frist would beat the stuffings out of her for the WH in 2008. Hillary is wildly unpopular, even among her own party's most avid.
Jeez! If these people knew how HARD it is to get a really good Secretary of State confirmed, they wouldn't be talking this way. I say, let Condi get herself some really good credentials built up at the State Department, and just take it from there in 2008.
