Teenager Shot By Drug Agents Dies

14-Year-Old Taken Off Life-Support

Posted: 8:51 a.m. CST February 12, 2003

SAN ANTONIO -- A teenage girl who was shot by Drug Enforcement Administration agents died Tuesday night at Wilford Hall Medical Center.

Ashley Villarreal (pictured, left), 14, was taken off life-support equipment after she was declared brain dead from a gunshot wound she suffered to the back of her head late Sunday night.

DEA officials and San Antonio police officials said that agents fired four rounds at a car Villarreal was driving because the vehicle was speeding toward them and they suspected the girl's father, a suspected drug dealer, was in the vehicle trying to get away. Joey Angel Villarreal, who was the subject of surveillance that night, was not in the car with his daughter. He ended up turning himself in to authorities Monday.

"It was no mistake," said Daniel Robles, a family friend who was in the car with the teen. "It was no accident."

Robles said the agents were not wearing rain gear during the surveillance and claimed that they allegedly boxed in Villarreal's car and opened fire.

"These are professionals," Robles said. "There's nothing professional about this."

Law officers declined to respond to Robles' version or to discuss details of the case Tuesday, citing a pending investigation.

Robles, who was with family members when they said they last goodbyes to the teen, said he promised her that his version of the story will come out.

"Ashley's dead. They took her life. Nothing's gonna bring it back," Robles said.

We have gangs of robbers that use a strobe light with a blue plastic to stop naïve drivers.

Then then proceed to either carjack you or rob you or kill you.

What is the prudent action to take if you see an unmarked car with a flashing blue light on its dashboard follwing your vehicle?

I live in SA and this was all over the news the night it happened. The DEA was staking out a known drug dealers home when they saw the young lady and another man (who they thought was the drug dealer) leave the home and get into the car and drive away with the lights off. The DEA believed they were trying to escape and they blocked the road with their vehicles. The young lady at this point accelerated and headed towards one of the agents. This agent fired 2 rounds at the vehicle striking the front windshield. After this the young lady put the car in reverse and began backing towards the agents behind her vehicle, one of the agents fired 2 rounds thru the back windshield striking her in the head with one. Anyone who thinks they just walked up and executed her is sadly mistaken. I'm not defending what they did since I honestly think they could have simply disabled the vehicle rather than shooting the driver but I can't second guess the shooters since they did have a 3000lb vehicle coming at them with the intent to run them over. From the video of the scene this shoot was at very close range so I can believe the agents thought they didn't have time to avoid the oncoming car and so they fired in self-defense.

but I think you just nailed what the cover story in the official report will be.

You bet, they have no choice in the matter, or else they are going to look even worse.

Dear ol' drug dealing dad killed her. He killed people by selling cocaine. In turn a loved one of his was killed.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Don't sell cocaine.

Moral of the story: don't do business with crooked cops. When they come to demand a bigger cut of the action, they'll shoot your daughter.

Dennis, even if it was the case that she tried to run them down - what would you do in a similar situation?

It's the middle of the night in a parking lot and a group of thugs point guns at you. What would you do?

Anyway you slice it this was shoddy, criminally negligent police work - at best.

Thanks ever so much. This rings true to me! It was a very chaotic situation. You create chaos and you might get killed. If I were a cop no way would I lest someone cripple me with their automobile. Put me in a wheelchair. Screw that!

I hope all the drug legalizers read what you got off the TV news!

99% of cops are "good cops?"

Read "Serpico." Written by a cop, about cops. Read "The Choirboys," written by Joseph Wambaugh (a cop) about cops. Non-fiction, real live cops.

It seems that there are these fantasies you spout about "your idea" of cops, and then there are the things we can learn about the reality of cops from the few cops who have the integrity to actually tell the truth.

Really? The dad shot his daughter in the back of the head as she was speeding toward him in a car? You really belive that, Dane?

Uh no, first where was that night. He was nowhere to be found. He surrendered himself the next day. Second why he is letting his 14 year old girl(not of legal driving age) driving with a "friend" during the night. Third why didn't she just stiop instead of ramming cars, maybe her father's "friend" was saying get out of here the fuzz are going to bust us.

Oh yes I will hear the stories about how this was all innocent and her father's friend was just trying to tach her to drive, if that was the point how come the father was in hiding and surrendered himself the next day.

The father was missing and dealing in a dangerous business so yes the father is responsible, because his reckless actions put his daughter in danger.

Actually, alcohol kills many thousands more people every year. Alcohol is truly a killer drug and makes most other drugs appear tame in comparison.

I think your closer to the truth. She was probably killed because she didn't have the protection money she was supposed to.

I certainly don't believe they are always wrong.

But when they are sometimes wrong, they should be held to a higher standard than your everyday Joe.

Not have it swept under the rug.

Cocaine kills people.
So does water. So do DEA agents.
When you kill people by pushing drugs you just may suffer from instant karma.
So who died from the cocaine her father purportedly sold?
You speak of "instant karma" one second...
G_d does not play dice with the universe.
...and G_d the next. A little theological conflict there? Karma relates to Buddhism.
You killed so in turn your loved one is killed.
You sound just like the Islamists now.
MORAL OF THE STORY:
There is no moral to this story.

Well they were shoddy, unprofessional drug dealers so the score is even. You sell a drug that kills people and in turn your daughter gets killed. The karmic scales get balanced once again. The wheel of the grist mill grinds exceedingly fine!

Don't go there. My NROTC buddies have to go there because for some reason the Navy doesn't base its operations out of WPI like the other two services. Its mostly women anyway im not afraid of a bunch of namby pamby liberal arts students.
