'Cheap sex' is making men give up on marriage
NY Post ^ | September 2, 2017 | Larry Getlan

Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.

The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.

Regnerus calls it “cheap sex,” an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.

Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you don’t even need relationships.

The result is “two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration,” Regnerus writes in “Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy” (Oxford University Press).

In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.

Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles’ prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

No actually I am a real Christian. Not one that reads self-help books and thinks that the role of the woman is to work 60 hours a week and raise cats.

That is correct. Men just adapted to the changes in society.

“Women love men that are powerful, in charge, and to some extent put them in their place.”

When they tire of that they’ll get a lawyer to put you in your place (as an ATM); I’m married with kids, and completely understand why many men couldn’t be bothered. It isn’t for everyone (male or female).

In what world did that happen?

Does a woman’s right to abort ring any bells?
Sometime in the not so distant past it was a stigma
to have a child out of wedlock?

>>And no, I do not call free market capitalism the cause of moral degeneracy

That’s not what I said. I’m talking about the free market capitalism of men and sex and his choices.

I agree totally that Communism is the reason why women have been convinced to devalue their bodies and virtue for the last 50 years.

I wonder, what year was the “tipping point” for this?

Many of those adults living at home pay rent to do so; it makes sense when they have no need for a home of their own (no wife/kids) and their parents have the room (along with the security/safety it brings as parents age).

Here in the South it used to be said that sex outside of wedlock was forbidden to a woman - unless it was with the man she intended to marry.

I’m blessed; when we married, I lost interest in any other woman. That was 35 years ago.

Nowadays I see people refer to their partner in cohabitation as their husband or wife - when they aren’t married in any way, shape, or form.

Well, with the current laws, I’ve met women who’ve had to pay “support” for an ex-husband who simply refused to work or (in one case) because he couldn’t get a job because he was a child molester. So there’s big incentives for women not to marry as well.

The big problem, in my mind, is that men no longer have pride in fatherhood and no longer want to be fathers. So we get back to the pill again.

Once upon a time, men may not have set out to become fathers, but they did (a very large percentage of births in the New England of the Puritans, for example, were way before 9 months after the marriage) and then they had to marry the woman and they rose to the challenge.

Animal fathers have no interest in their offspring, but one of the distinguishing features of human beings is that they do care, especially if society encourages them to do so.

Our formerly Judeo-Christian society did, but the modern one doesn’t - and neither does Islamic society (I say this for those posters here who seem to be longing to suppress women), in which the wife has no rights at all and the father is frequently the first one to “de-flower” his son. And the father son relationship after that is nothing but hostility, and the relationship with daughters is nothing but getting a commodity ready for the market.

The problem is our new non-Christian culture.

...and yet you didn’t mind taking her off the market for a few years (when she might have found a truly decent man) and you didn’t mind getting the milk free instead of buying the cow, did you? You are proof that all the bitter guys here are no better than the women they so despise.

It’s not always kids taking advantage and being lazy. In tough economic times, families move in together, multigenerationally. It happened during the Great Depression to such an extent that many houses were built with two front doors. Maybe the parents are having trouble meeting expenses and the kids are helping out in exchange for a place that they, too, can afford to live in.

“Very good point. Man is a more basic animal. Point A to point B (good woman) is a straight line. If point B no longer exists, or is impossible to get to, then we change our goal.”

We’re really easy to make happy. Feed us, give us sex a few times a week, don’t nag, and don’t screw guys behind our back.

If you do that, you can pretty much nail down a good dude.

White men get no such affirmative action; college classes have been 60/40 female/male for years now, and it never made a difference to the colleges.

Now we listen to the wailing of ageing women with college degrees who can’t get someone to marry/breed with them.

When I come home, its quiet. I have a low tolerance for superfluous crap. Women used to be a lot smarter, particularly about what men would and would not tolerate. There’s something very nice about being able to take a woman home to her place after a date, a weekend, whatever.

I see no value added, and women used to be great at that. In my grandparents case, both sets, my grandfathers knew their wives were like compound interest. Today? Its more like automatic billpay.
