Buell and Grant Surprise the Rebels at Shiloh
Civil War Daily Gazette ^ | April 7, 2012 | Eric

April 7, 1862 (Monday) Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee

General Grant tried to sleep, first under a tree near his men and then in a cabin that he found already occupied with the wounded. Through the night, Union transports and reinforcements arrived at Pittsburg Landing, bringing 25,000 much-needed men. Grant was certain that his line could withstand a Confederate attack. In fact, he was so certain, that he wanted to go on the offensive.

Meanwhile, General Beauregard, now the sole commander of the Confederate Army of Mississippi, slept in General Sherman’s tent, the former owner vacating it as the Rebels attacked the previous day. He had reported to President Davis a “complete victory,” but gave no clue as to how he would follow it up come morning. He had no idea that Union General Buell’s Army of the Ohio had joined Grant’s Army of the Tennessee. His army was scattered, disassociated and worn out. His plan must have been to attack as he took no precautions to defend against a Union assault. He believed he had Grant exactly where he wanted him. And he was wrong.

As the rains fell over friend and foe alike, Grant arrayed his men. He did not, however, command the entire Union force...

Happy Rain: "INVADING YANKEE AGGRRESORS SURPRISE CONFEDERATE PATRIOTS AT SHILOH"

Over 100,000 white Southern Unionists served in the Union army.
These included:

"Statistics indicate other Southerners’ ability to cool white Confederates’ ardor; and the numbers illuminate but the tip of the iceberg.

Southern blacks supplied close 150,000 Union soldiers and sailors (northern free blacks provided another 50,000).
Border South whites added 200,000 and Confederate state whites 100,000 soldiers to Union troop strength.

The resulting total of 450,000 Southerners who wore Union blue, half as many as the 900,000 Southerners who wore Confederate gray, replaced every one of the Federals’ 350,000 slain men and supplied 100,000 more men besides—a number greater than the usual size of Robert E. Lee’s main Confederate army.

White Confederates developed no such replacements for their mounting casualties; and in addition, anti-Confederate Southerners piled on psychological, economic, and geographic burdens that ultimately helped flatten white Confederates’ resiliency."

THe South didn't keep records as accurately when volunteers enlisted. The Richmond fire burned a lot of records. So I only have anecdotal evidence to say that the converse was probably true, as many border state residents and northerners fought for the Confederacy. There are cemeteries filled in Maryland and West Virginia of old Rebels.

My mother worked in Maryland for the Montgomery County Public Schools, whose first director was a confederate Calvary Officer that died in the 1910's the name was Anderson I think.

KoRn: "...For about 100 years anyway. Though I wasn't yet alive at the time, I understand that we started going to hell back during the 1960s, and haven't looked back."

central_va: "If it wasn’t for the South the USA would be a socialist/communist country by now."

Our Neo-Confederates like to blame ole' Abe Lincoln for most everything bad since, but in truth, the Federal Government remained much the same (i.e., 2% of GDP) until the early 1900s Progressive Era.
Its growth from our Founders' Original Intent to today's monstrosity happened in four major lurches:

  1. Early 1900s Progressive Era (i.e., Woodrow Wilson) added the 16th and 17th Amendments -- Income Tax and Direct Election of Senators both concentrating power and money in Washington.

  2. Franklin Roosevelt's 1930s era New Deal taxes (i.e., Social Security) more than doubled Federal Revenues, to 10% of GDP.

  3. Lyndon Johnson's 1960s era Great Society added unlimited new Federal entitlements (i.e., Medicare and Medicaid).

  4. Barrack Obama's "stimulus" and other spending have increased Washington's share from 20% to now 25% of GDP.

And our now solidly Conservative South voted and cheered for all of this, until Lyndon Johnson made clear that they were not to be the main beneficiaries of Washington's largess.

The statement stands on its own merits, and everyone knows it to be true. A divided country North and South, if it happened 150 years ago - by now the North would at best be a Euro Socialist state. Denying that will make you sound like an idiot.

The "Great Society" programs were enacted in 1965. The asshat jerk didn't even try to run for reelection and it wasn't just because he screwed up in Vietnam.

No doubt that's true -- Maryland, Western Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri, to name a few, all supplied substantial troops to the Confederate Army.

How many they supplied, and what percentages went South versus North is probably debatable.
Somewhere I saw numbers for Maryland suggesting two served the Union for every one in the Confederate Army -- or more-or-less the reverse of Confederate states like Tennessee and North Carolina.

As for more sympathetic "Doughface" Northern states, like Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois -- I've never seen numbers, if there are any, on Confederate troops from those areas.

Enlistment records in the South were not bad as I understand it, it is just that all the data was stored in Richmond with no duplicates anywhere and it all went up in flames.

Personally I want out of this Union.

You can leave any time you want. Try France. I hear they have good food there.

The USA already is a socialist/communist country, to a larger and larger degree each decade, as our politicians (sadly not all of them Democrats) figure out more and more ways to defeat the Constitution's limitations on the size and power of Federal Government.

Our only consolation used to be that we could at least say, "we are not as socialist/communistic as, say, Russia or China or Western Europe.
But today there are lots of countries all over the world who score higher on the "freedom scale" than we do.

In the latest report we rank #10 in "economic freedom" behind:

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Singapore
  3. Australia
  4. New Zealand
  5. Switzerland
  6. Canada
  7. Chile
  8. Mauritius
  9. Ireland

  10. USA

In addition, another 20 countries score roughly as well as we do, including most of Western Europe.
Point is: we don't have to become much more socialist/communistic to reach the levels of many European Union countries.
We're almost there now.

So I'd suggest that the South's alleged ability to anchor us to Conservatism is perhaps overrated?

;-)

You think like a statist and have no understanding of regional differences and states rights. You are indeed a son of Abraham (Lincoln not the old testament one)

Christ sake you never give up, do you? Living in America isn’t good enough for you? Why don’t you leave and find some place else to live. I’m sure your parents would like to do something else with the basement.

From reading posts like yours. Your standards for a republic and tolerance for statism are much higher than mine.

This seems to be the natural inclination of a butt kisser personality.
