Over 100,000 white Southern Unionists served in the Union army.
These included:

• 42,000 from Tennessee
• 30,000 from Virginia and West Virginia
• 25,000 from North Carolina
• 10,000 from Arkansas
• 7,000 from Louisiana
• 3,500 from Florida
• 3,000 from Alabama

"Statistics indicate other Southerners’ ability to cool white Confederates’ ardor; and the numbers illuminate but the tip of the iceberg.

Southern blacks supplied close 150,000 Union soldiers and sailors (northern free blacks provided another 50,000).
Border South whites added 200,000 and Confederate state whites 100,000 soldiers to Union troop strength.

The resulting total of 450,000 Southerners who wore Union blue, half as many as the 900,000 Southerners who wore Confederate gray, replaced every one of the Federals’ 350,000 slain men and supplied 100,000 more men besides—a number greater than the usual size of Robert E. Lee’s main Confederate army.

White Confederates developed no such replacements for their mounting casualties; and in addition, anti-Confederate Southerners piled on psychological, economic, and geographic burdens that ultimately helped flatten white Confederates’ resiliency."

THe South didn't keep records as accurately when volunteers enlisted. The Richmond fire burned a lot of records. So I only have anecdotal evidence to say that the converse was probably true, as many border state residents and northerners fought for the Confederacy. There are cemeteries filled in Maryland and West Virginia of old Rebels.

My mother worked in Maryland for the Montgomery County Public Schools, whose first director was a confederate Calvary Officer that died in the 1910's the name was Anderson I think.

General Robert E Lee (God bless and rest his noble and honorable soul) was a Virginia patriot in that he was conservative enough to know his commonwealth, one of “these” and not “the” United States was his “first” call to loyalty—and the alliance of the sovereign states his second much as the patriots of the First War for American Independence felt.

Those born on Southern soil who fought for the murdering, raping,looting and burning savages who laid waste the land that enabled their very existence were the bastard fathers of the bastard scalawags who were the treacherous running dogs of the avarice infested and hate infected Satan spawned carpetbaggers. I piss on their legacy and consider their progeny cursed--but in a nice way:).
