The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.
The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

Someone you described would be a person with a keen grasp of US history and with a deep understanding of the pathetic mess the republic currently finds itself.
There will always be a war between believers in the original republic and the boot lick lovers of the bastardized Constitution Dictatorship we have morphed into thru bloodshed and Progressive-ism.
As to whether it evolves to out and out secession? If it hasn't happened by now it probably won't. No, the state-ists are in ensuring we don't have a peaceful secession. We patriots of liberty are left with two choices; out and out revolution or acquiescence to the feminized homosexual-ized Neo Roman Empire. Well, we have our Caligula in the White House and fags can prance openly in the barracks, so IMO we are close now.
I think you're incorrect; while you and your neighbors may well disapprove of adultery, unless you can force your local adulterers to wear a scarlet "A" you do tolerate the presence and behavior of adulterers.
and those who commit adultery are ostracized.
They may or may not be shunned by some of their relatives and friends, but by society at large? Not so much. This isn't the 17th Century, after all. And speaking of that...
In this and most Western nations, we have the Bible to help guide our moral values.
"Most"? Which Western nations don't have access to the Bible?
And nowhere in the Bible have I found a passage that states that the morals set forth in the Bible can be eliminated over time.
The fact is, morals do change over time, regardless of what the Bible says. Slavery is considered an evil act today by the vast majority of people. In the 19th Century, we fought a war over it. 2,000 years ago, it was the norm.
Morality, ethics, and religion are human inventions. They're opinions, not universal laws. The universe itself enforces the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. It doesn't enforce "Thou shalt not murder".
In other words, my comment from post 590 was spot on: "your liberal indoctrination is so complete that you're terrified to entertain information opposing your deeply held prejudices."
BTW, do you adhere to that model across the board? In other words, when you studied geometry, did you shun modern mathematicians and go straight to the works of Euclid?
And when I read the Declaration of Secession by the states of South Carolina, Texas, Georgia and Mississippi, I can see exactly why they opted for such action.
Then you understand that the refusal of the northern states to fulfill their constitutional obligations, the loss of equal status among the states and nullification of the Acts of Congress by the northern states was the cause. Good for you! Perhaps we're making progress!
These states told us that the reason for leaving the Union was because they desired to keep human beings in slavery.
Obviously your stellar education from that liberal college in Austin didn't impress reading comprehension in their curriculums. If it had you would agree that the reason for secession in all cases was constitutional subversion and violation by the northern states.
Interestingly, on this thread, I have not seen a post where the supporters of the Confederacy have disavowed these Declarations of Succession.
Why should we? Us unreconstructed Rebs all understand that the reason for secession was States Rights which are well documented in the various Declarations of Secession.
Yeah, like this thumper guy. Words from his about page: "former 'Leftist' who saw the light"
Left wing indoctrination is thorough and deep and if this 'former leftist', thumper, sees any conservative light it's just a pinprick from the bottom of the liberal abyss.
Yes he should:
"Rebellion is always an option!!"--Jim Robinson
You gonna attack JimRob, thumper?
If he does, he is going to get “thumped”.....I would LOVE to see that!
Which is precisely the reason why one of the main planks in the liberal yankee agenda is to eliminate Christianity.
I believe that when thumper sobers up today he’ll regret some of that stupidity that he posted last night.
RIP Sorry for your loss.
If I was a former leftist the last people I would want to know that are the people on Free Republic.
It seems the former [leftist, dems, commies] are always SO proud of their former evil. Free Republic is not Political AA for former left wing nuts.
Personally, I think he’s lying about the ‘former’ part....
Are you still pushing for the breakup of the United States, or have you dropped that punk rhetoric after it was pointed out to you how many radical left wingers are committed neo-secessionists also?
Excellent post.
When you think about it, isn’t that a distinction without a difference?
Funny, it is the left that will probably secede from the rest.
Sherman is no better than Bin Laden, in fact, was worse. He did it to his own countrymen. A terrorist butcher approved by the power hungry, big government Illinois butcher....ole dishonest Abe.
Vulgar, offensive and out of line post.
as a “ Constitutional Dictatorship”
_____________
Not there yet, but if we get 6 more years of Obastard, I think that will probably be just what it is.
If a US general tried to do in Afghanistan today what Sherman did in Georgia 1864, he would be court martialed.
