So here I was - taking my daughter to school this morning (She is a high school sophomore) and she was telling me of a discussion she and the other kids were having about Black History Month.
One kid suggested that - to be fair - there should be a White History Month. He was quickly chastised; "Whites don't deserve a special history month due to the racial prejudices they've committed over the years". My daughter related some of the "Rosa Parks" types of incidents as evidence of why there should be no White History Month.
It was early. I was driving and had not yet had my first cup of coffee. And so I was speechless.
Freepers
What would YOU have said?
A come back would be that blacks don’t deserve anything because although they make up 10 percent of the population, they make up 50 percent of the inmates and a high percentage of the welfare cases.
Other people need months for their histories because a year would be difficult on account of their insignificant contributions to history. Whites make history and by that I mean caucasians which include not just Europeans but Indians, Iranians, Turks, Arabs, Pakistanis (most people around the Mediterranean as well as most in ex soviet states).
I read an interesting article that made the point that children don’t study history till 4th grade EXcept for Black history which starts in first grade. IOW their first and earliest exposure is to how terrible the US was/is.
Whites freed the slaves. Besides, excluding one over another is the very definition of racism.
“Whites don’t deserve a special history month due to the racial prejudices they’ve committed over the years”
Then why do blacks deserve a black history month when over the years they have engaged in headhunting, canibalism, slavery, slave selling, and tribal extermination which in some parts of Africa are still going on today?
Isn’t that why blacks in America prefer to be called African-Americans, so they don’t forget their roots?
Having a Black History Month is extremely racist. It promotes one group over all others based only on skin color.
Men and women of all skin colors - white, black, brown, yellow, and red - are part of history, good or bad. The lessons we learn from history teach us how we got to where we are today. To promote the success and failures of any group while ignoring or diminishing another distorts historical reality in dangerous ways.
Historical periods of good and evil among all races and cultures must be recognized before proper perspective can be gained and lessons extracted in context to illustrate where good and evil currently exist in the modern day world.
“Whites don’t deserve a special history month due to the racial prejudices they’ve committed over the years””
Over the ‘years’.....yes, let’s all continue to live in the ancient past. The idea that a white baby born today should have to be labeled racist is insane.
The problems of the black ‘community’ are the same problem any of us have...family. That’s where their mistreatment comes from...their own, but it’s easier to blame anyone else.
Who set them free and fought for their right to be free. Abe was white, Kennedy was white. Without the “white folk” it would not have happened. That is the truth and that is never told....so who is the racist here. Many in my ancestorial tree fought on the union side including quakers who convinced Abe slavery was wrong based on the bible, all are created equal and free. In the 60’s many college students risk their lives and died for the cause yet they are never remembered, mentioned during the month that should recall history the way it actually was.
Including the First Lackey, Barack Hussein Obama. Mama.
Both are mainly celebrated by single, white, female, public school teachers.
If you need something "special" to make you feel "special" then you will never be special.
Maybe there should be more black American exchange students going to Africa for a summer. ;^)
They might come back with some appreciation for what they have here such as the right to not have your arms cut off if you vote against the party in power.
They might also look at an American supermarket with a new eye. How about a flush toilet? How about a tv, central heating, air conditioning, automobiles, well stocked stores etc. How many of these things are African inventions? I see many Africans trying to immigrate to this country but I don’t see much traffick going in the other direction.
White did not event slavery but whites ended it.
Arguably, it ain’t over yet. But we ended it our countries, by force when necessary.
I like it!
My standard response is that blacks, women, and hispanics only account for 3 months out of the year. The rest of the months are white history months, just not officially recognized.
Besides that, do we really need a whole month to celebrate the invention of peanut butter ?
I thought about this long and hard. Yes, there should be a White History month - either we have a history month for everyone or nobody.
So I’ve decided to make January White History Month, and here is why: Martin Luther King wanted all of us to get along - he dreamt of black kids and white kids walking hand in hand in solidarity. So I figure, why not? Have Martin Luther King Day in White History Month - I think he would have liked that, given that MLK Day will always be celebrated.
Also, I don’t think we need to dwell on the negative - there were many white people who worked to end racism and if it weren’t for them, our society wouldn’t be where it is today. Why not use White History Month to remember them?
