The other day -- after slogging through a check-in line at one of the nation's busiest airports, dutifully removing my shoes and belt, and checking my bag and pockets for other potentially dangerous items (water and loose change) -- I was pulled aside by a crack Transportation Security Administration agent so he could further investigate the contents of my carry-on. While waiting, I witnessed what looked to be a 10-year-old boy being molested by a 250-pound man. Now, normally I would have reported this incident to the proper authorities. Inappropriate contact with a child, inside or outside his clothing, is...

TSA Administrator David Pekoske said a surveillance program known as "Quiet Skies," which has been criticized for tracking American citizens not suspected of any crimes, "makes an awful lot of sense." "Our job overall as an agency, and the air marshals in particular, in flight, are working to make sure that we mitigate any risks that could occur in aircraft at 10,000, 20,000, 30,000 feet," Pekoske told CBS News in his first TV interview since the "Quiet Skies" program was disclosed to the public. "If an agency responsible for security has some information that might indicate that there may be...

Some Americans have been trailed and closely monitored by undercover air marshals as they traveled on U.S. flights, as part of a previously undisclosed Transportation Security Administration program called Quiet Skies. The existence of the program was first reported Saturday by the The Boston Globe, citing an internal TSA bulletin from March as well as anonymous sources within the department. The Globe says the program targets travelers who are not on terrorist watch lists and are not suspected of a crime. Some air marshals involved have expressed misgivings about the domestic surveillance program, questioning whether it's legal and whether it's...

A Yuba City man says law enforcement confiscated his money but he didn’t commit a crime. Now he’s fighting to get back tens of thousands of dollars. Yuba City resident Josh Gingerich buys and flips trucks. A recent buying trip to do that cost him a bag of cash which was seized by a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) drug interdiction task force at O’Hare Airport. “A little over 29 grand,” the amount taken said Gingerich who was not arrested and did not break any laws. “No marijuana, no drugs.” He believes an airport TSA agent saw the money in...

They came for your laptops. And for your liquids, and your shoes. Now, the Transportation Security Administration is coming for your snacks. Passengers at airports around the country — including all three of the Washington region’s major airports — are reporting that, increasingly, TSA agents are instructing them to remove their snacks and other food items from their carry-ons and place them in those ubiquitous plastic bins for separate screening. It’s not part of agency’s standard policy, according to TSA spokesman Mike England. It’s simply a recommendation issued by the agency last year to help speed the bag-check process. Screening...

TSA agents are facing heavy criticism on social media after a video of a 96-year-old wheelchair-bound woman being searched by agents at Washington Dulles International Airport was seen by almost 9 million people last month. Jeanne Clarkson told CBS News that she was furious that her mother, who is seen in the video being patted down by TSA agents in her chair and with a metal detector for metallic devices, was treated in such a manner. "I was just shocked. I've traveled with her before, I've been in a wheelchair myself unable to walk through the machines and I've never...

Crystal Tadlock told Fox 31 Denver, toward the end of her flight from Paris, flight attendants passed out apples in plastic bags as a snack. Tadlock put the fruit in her carry-on to save for when she was hungry during the second leg of her trip. Once Tadlock arrived in the U.S., she went through Customs and her bag was...

Authorities identified the “violent deportee” who remained on the loose Wednesday after escaping immigration custody hours before at New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport. Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke, 31, from Senegal, reportedly fled authorities at the airport while going through security. He was at the airport for deportation, expected to board a flight back to his home country. “Mbacke entered the country lawfully in 2005 before violating the terms of his status. He was ordered deported in September 2015 by an immigration judge,” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a Wednesday statement. “Mbacke has previous criminal convictions for multiple...
  • 1 in 200,000 Passengers Forgot a Gun in Carry-on

In 2017, 771,556,886 passengers traveled through 440 federally secured airports. Of those, only 3,957 forget that a firearm was in their carry-on baggage. There are over 400 million private firearms in the United States, 16 million people with permits to carry firearms, and 13 states where no permit is required to carry a concealed weapon.  That less than 4,000 forgot a firearm in their carry-on is amazingly low. That is one for every 200,000 passengers. Just a little over 1/3 or 34.8% of the firearms had a round in the chamber. They could not have been accidentally discharged in...

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie learned the drawbacks of ordinary life Thursday morning when he tried to bypass the TSA line and was denied entry to a special entrance at Newark Liberty International Airport, normally reserved for VIP guests, dignitaries and elected officials, according to a source familiar with the matter. When Christie arrived at Terminal C in the airport with his New Jersey State Police detail and was taken to the entrance, which is located near the exit of the restricted area of the terminal, a Port Authority officer refused to let Christie use the special entrance, informing...

Seven members of a cable television crew have been arrested after they tried to sneak a fake explosive device through a security checkpoint at Newark Liberty International Airport, the Transportation Security Administration said Thursday. A law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation said that the team was filming for cable network CNBC, which is based in Englewood Cliffs. The TSA did not release the names of the people they said were arrested, and the Port Authority only said that it was investigating the incident. The law enforcement source said the crew likely would be charged by the Essex County...

Taking a semester off from Texas Tech University to help her family recover from Hurricane Harvey, Diana Durkin was thrilled to return to campus for her sophomore year. But ironically, it was her enthusiasm that nearly halted her plans when she was stopped by the TSA before a Jan. 6 flight out of William P. Hobby Airport in Houston. “I love Texas Tech. I love the people, I love the school. Anytime I see someone I get really excited,” the 19-year-old told BuzzFeed News. In a nod to TTU’s mascot, the Masked Rider, Durkin said that Texas Tech fans often...

WASHINGTON — Since the change was made to use “District of Columbia” on D.C. licenses and ID cards, there have been reports of people having their ID’s authenticity questioned in airport security screening lines. A recent instance of this occurred after Thanksgiving, as a D.C. resident tried to catch a flight out of Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, according to D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton. Her office said the traveler almost missed their flight after officers discussed whether or not the license was valid before eventually letting them through. Norton sent a letter Wednesday to David Pekoske, administrator...

MANCHESTER, N.H. (CBS) – A Transportation Security Administration worker packed more than just a sandwich in his lunch bag while heading to work at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. The worker mistakenly packed a gun, which was found by officials as the worker passed through a security checkpoint screening before work, confirmed TSA spokesman Mike McCarthy on Tuesday. “The firearm was detected on Friday at the security checkpoint when a TSA employee underwent screening at the beginning of their shift,” McCarthy said.
