Orange County (CA) voters: help defeat Andrew Stein, a liberal candidate for Superior Court Judge. From his FB page: "I am a Democrat, raised in a family of working people and union members. I am a liberal, in that I believe that drug addiction and drug addicts need rehabilitation, as opposed to being warehoused in a cell." What Stein does do not mention (and deletes comments about it) is that he defended a animal abuser in 2011. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/dog-312079-stein-nizato.html If you can, please post comments on his FB page: https://www.facebook.com/AndrewMSteinforsuperiorcourt2016/

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A German shepherd fell out her owner's truck and stayed five weeks on the highway median near Sacramento for the owner to return. Officers received calls every day about the animal, but they weren't able to find her for over a month. Last Saturday, authorities were finally able catch the dog, who has since been nicknamed "Freeway Frida."

"It's with heavy hearts we announce the passing of K9 Bruno at approximately 0555 hours this morning," the post said.

While growing up, I read a constant litany explaining that Javelina's were not dangerous. I read, over and over, that all the old stories of them attacking humans were old wives tales, not documented, never happened. So, I was a bit surprised to come across a news article from the 7th of May, 2016, that had hard evidence of an unprovoked real world attack by a herd of javelinas.  It was life threatening for an adult human with two leashed dogs. From fox10phoenix.com: The victim told authorities that a herd of javelina came out of a nearby wash, crossed...
  • Don't shoot at snakes while in the water with a .410 Load

Here's a story from one of the angler's on his experience shooting water moccasins with the .410 load. While out fishing with his brother-in-law, snakes were everywhere swimming right up to within a few feet of us to check us out, heads above the water the entire time and not even remotely afraid. Given that I live about 100 yards from the pond, and I'm not a fan of water moccasins (which I'm pretty sure is what these were, because most harmless water snakes swim with their heads down and shy away from disturbances), I ran back to the house...
  • Owning a German shepherd taught me more about self-awareness and safety than any class ever did

There are things I love about being a woman. The perils of walking and traveling alone and the safety concerns that accompany it are not among them. As an avid hiker and a stubbornly independent person, this has always irritated me. I don't like that constant, nagging feeling of unease. I don't really enjoy double-checking for my pepper spray in my purse or carrying my keys between my fingers on my way back to my car. I particularly hate getting catcalled, followed and leered at. Then I got a German shepherd. The catcalls were the first thing I noticed vanish...

All sophisticated life on the planet Earth may owe its existence to one freakish event. At first glance, a tree could not be more different from the caterpillars that eat its leaves, the mushrooms sprouting from its bark, the grass growing by its trunk, or the humans canoodling under its shade. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. Zoom in closely, and you will see that these organisms are all surprisingly similar at a microscopic level. Specifically, they all consist of cells that share the same basic architecture. These cells contain a central nucleus—a command center that is stuffed with DNA and...

Over a dozen German shepherds, rescued from an abandoned house in Highland, California, are embarking on a new life with the help of a breed specific rescue agency. The German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County has been hard at work, pulling many of the homeless German shepherds out of the Devore Animal Shelter - on Tuesday, the founder of the organization updated Facebook followers about the rescue effort. The Facebook post states, "Yesterday was another very rewarding day, with 6 more of the dogs from the Devore confiscation being removed from the shelter. The dogs have all been very agreeable,...

Periodic mass extinctions on Earth, as indicated in the global fossil record, could be linked to a suspected ninth planet, according to research published by a faculty member of the University of Arkansas Department of Mathematical Sciences. Daniel Whitmire, a retired professor of astrophysics now working as a math instructor, published findings in the January issue of Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society that the as yet undiscovered "Planet X" triggers comet showers linked to mass extinctions on Earth at intervals of approximately 27 million years. Though scientists have been looking for Planet X for 100 years, the possibility...

The Council Against Inhumanity to Rodents (CAIR) today announced that even though not all of the millions of Rodents on Earth are Rats, and even though not all Rats are rabid, all rats are being mercilessly disparaged due to the un-Rat actions of a few. Ratophobia must cease!(Please see also, USA Today: U.S. cities face anti-Muslim backlash and Obama Praises “Enormous” Muslim Contributions to Our Country.) Sadly, there was recently a deplorable incident in which a poor, disenfranchised Muslim woman was bitten by a rat. While hard at work in the kitchen preparing the evening meal for her beloved husband, an Islamophobic Rat...

This is one of those you can't believe it stories until you believe it. But the dog pictured above was part of a heartwarming rescue after what had to be a harrowing ordeal at sea. This dog who fell off a fishing boat in the Pacific Ocean and had been "presumed dead" more than a month ago has now been found alive by Navy officials on an island 80 miles off the coast of San Diego, California. The 1-year-old German Shepherd, named Luna, was first reported missing the morning of Feb. 10 about 2 miles off of San Clemente Island...

U.S. Navy officials say Luna – a one-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd – was presumed to be lost at sea after falling overboard near Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Clemente Island (SCI) in Southern California on Feb. 10.

My sweet little Cashmere passed away today. She was only 9 1/2 years old. She had quit eating starting Friday so by Sunday I was panicking and took her to the emergency vet. She had lost quite a bit of weight already, due to polycystic kidney disease. The vet said we could only get maybe another couple weeks with her with treatment at the clinic, so we decided to end her suffering. She has about the sweetest cat I've ever had. Cautious, shy, the undercat among her brother and sister. I always had to protect her and make sure she...

How big ARE New York's rats? Researcher catches one-and-a-half pound rodent three times the size of a normal beast "...'I've caught rats all over the city, and I've seen the ones that I didn't catch. I think it's among the biggest that live in New York City,' said Matt Combs of Fordham University. [snip] One of the largest rats ever reported in New York City was a huge beast dubbed Master Splinter by the Twitter user that first posted a picture of it. The enormous rat was found in a Footlocker store in the Bronx in 2012, according to Twitter...

Questions are surrounding the alleged disappearance of a service dog named Kai A service dog "stolen" from the yard of a San Diego Marine veteran was in her ex-husband's possession and was never missing, the man’s lawyer told NBC 7 Wednesday. In November 2014, Alexandra Melnick enlisted the help of local media to find her dog Kai, who she said was taken from her Vista backyard.
