... “When a relationship breaks, when one part of your country is trying to get a divorce, it doesn’t work to just say, ‘You’re never going to be able to survive on your own. You’re going to be too poor. You’re going to come running back,’ ” said Rory Stewart, a Parliament member who represents the English side of the border. He helped to lay the first stone in July and has overseen the cairn’s construction ever since. “You have to say, ‘I love you.’ ”

Jac Kelvie was holding court in the parking lot of Dulono’s Pizza amid a cloud of exhaust, cigarette smoke and machismo. Hundreds of bikers turned out for the regular “First Thursday” event in south Minneapolis to show off their Harley Sportsters and Ducati Monsters and talk shop. While others revved their engines, Kelvie used bungee cargo nets to secure a single change of clothes, a toothbrush and a walking cane to his moped. A red plastic gas can was strapped to the front fender. Passersby in leather vests paused to gaze at the 5-foot-4 man in polyester pants with a...

The 21st-century back-to-the-farm movement stems from our yearning to escape the artificiality of modern urban life. Yet the domesticated plants and animals now found in most gardens and farms are themselves artificial, the results of extensive human meddling, cross-breeding and genetic manipulation. Mankind began engineering what we now call “farm animals,” including cattle, all the way back in the Neolithic period, between 10,000 and 5,000 B.C. Try as you might, you won’t find an untamed Jersey cow that originated naturally in the wild, because no such thing exists — just like there’s no such thing as a wild labradoodle. Cattle...

Just when you thought your weekend plans were really exciting, a few guys had to go and jump into an active volcano. Although George Kourounis, the adventurer responsible for the television series Angry Planet, is well known for extreme adventures, he really heated things up this time. (Sorry.) The good stuff starts at 1:10. Joined by Sam Cossman and guided by adventure filmmakers and lava lovers Geoff Mackely, Brad Ambrose and Gareth Hawken, the team willingly dropped themselves into the Marum Crater, an active lava lake on the summit of the Ambrym Volcano in Vanuatu, an Oceanian island nation located...
