Minnesota drivers will face a 1-in-88 chance of hitting a deer on the state’s highways this year, according to a report released Monday by the nation’s largest auto insurance company.

State Farm’s annual report estimates that Minnesota drivers will collide with 37,549 deer in 2014.

Minnesota drivers have the 8th highest odds of hitting a deer among the 50 states, according to the report, down from 6th highest in last year’s report.

That's just plain mean.

I'll tell you what the #50 state is, for those of you who haven't already surmised same:

Drivers in Hawaii face the lowest odds of striking a deer – just 1-in-10,281.

I came back from a gig in central KY last summer at midnight to my home 40 miles away and counted the deer near or on the road. In groups of 2 to 5, they numbered 37. I had to brake for some but I’ve not hit a deer in the three years I’ve been here, and I’ve come within inches of a couple.

I do a LOT of night and dusk driving. And I don’t text.

‘Do not rely on devices such as deer whistles.’

A friend swears by them. I’ve never hit a deer so they must work. But I’ve seen deer do really stupid things. Do they even have a brain?

Road Kill Stew!

Quite Popular in Rural America and Australia.

In Alaska it's a great way to eat Moose. In Australia Kangaroo tastes good I hear.

A vendor and motorcycle friend of mine has the ultimate deer story.

He and his wife were out riding one fall day on one of our major roads.

A buck leaped on the back of his wife and took her down. She spent three weeks in a hospital and another year recovering.

The buck fared even worse. It limped off into another lane of traffic and was mortally wounded by a collision with truck going the other direction. The PHP man called to the scene had to shoot it.

Car/deer accidents are so common here that police seldom bother to show up and insurance companies just say to email them a picture of the damage.

I’ve hit 3 deer and a cop only showed up one time. He didn’t even get out of his car.

But because Pennsylvania has so many more drivers, they have a 1-in-77 chance of striking a deer, the second highest in the nation.

Hint: The #1 state is right next door to us. And, no, it ain't New York which has more drivers than we do.

Actually I am a member of the “I hit a deer” club. Driving along Pacific Coast Highway on my way to work in Malibu.

A long time ago.

Kangaroo is not bad. I had a kangaroo burger in a Aussie themed restaurant in the Netherlands. Tasted like cow + Worcestershire sauce.

After I ate it, I called my wife and daughters back in the states. During the conversation, I told them what I had. They said “Awwww, but daddy, we like Kangaroos.” I told them so did I, they are tasty.

At one point I hit four different deer in a five year span. I occasionally had to creep through herds of deer. Where I used to live and commute to work, every evening (I worked the night shift) was a “where are the deer?” experience.

I have a gigantic steel bumper and brush guard on the front of my Chevy 4x4 PU, and I stopped counting long, long ago.
