Two New Jersey Transit buses collided Friday in a horrific t-bone crash in busy downtown Newark, killing one person and injuring at least 19 others, according to the county prosecutor's office. The identity of the person who died wasn't immediately known. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka told a news conference that the fatality was one of the bus drivers, and that 7 of the injured were in critical condition.

RENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — More smart guns would be sold in New Jersey under a measure that cleared the state Assembly Monday. As WCBS 880’s Kelly Waldron reported, the measure would create a roster of so-called smart guns, which can only be fired by authorized users, available for sale. The bill would also require most New Jersey gun retailers to carry a couple of smart guns in their stores.

MONTGOMERY, N.J. – New Jersey education officials say a school was allowed to give detention to a sixth-grader who told a student who doesn't eat meat that "vegetarians are idiots" and that "he should eat meat because he'd be smarter and have bigger brains." Metropolitan Medical Associates in Englewood, among the state’s largest abortion clinics, reached a $1.9 million settlement with a woman who suffered massive hemorrhaging, a coma, a stroke and a hysterectomy after she had an abortion at the facility in 2007.  The incident led to an inspection by the state, which shut the facility down for more than a month until improvements were made.  The settlement includes $1 million from the facility, $575,000 from one of the doctors involved in the case and $325,000 from another doctor who had assisted. Atlantic City has so little money left that it could miss a $1.8 million bond payment due Sunday, a step that would make it the first New Jersey municipality to default on debt since the Great Depression. A northern New Jersey school district has voted to adopt a policy allowing transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms based on their gender identity. The Pascack Valley Regional High School District voted 6-1 to pass a policy they say is designed to protect transgender students' rights.
