  • Question 1 a first step in eroding Nevada’s gun laws

Las Vegas Sun ^ | Stavros Anthony
In a recent editorial (“NRA’s wailing doesn’t drown out facts on background checks,” Sept. 4-10 edition), The Sunday claims the Question 1 gun-control ballot initiative is an “attempt at reasonable gun control” and portrays opponents as “fear-mongering.” But in the same breath, The Sunday acknowledges expanded background checks would will not solve gun violence and adds, “it is a step in the right direction.” That means that if the state were to adopt Question 1, which would criminalize virtually all private firearms transfers, gun-control supporters would immediately be calling for even more gun-control laws. That is exactly how it has...

The leader of a statewide law enforcement union said Sunday Nevada’s expanded background check ballot question isn’t about protecting the Second Amendment — it’s about promoting public safety. Jim Dunlap, president of the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers, told the Las Vegas Sun he disagrees with most of the state’s sheriffs when it comes to Question 1. “As top law enforcement officials, they have an obligation to their employees and to the people who elect them,” he said. “They say their opposition is about the Second Amendment, but our stand is on public safety. This measure will make it...

Nate Silver famously has a secret algorithm to determine who is the likely winner in a race. His algorithm is showing that Trump has broken fifty percent for the first time in Nevada tonight. This is significant because Silver calculates more than polls, including the economy, the incumbent, etc. Using all of this, Silver is seeing Nevada is even.

In the battleground state of Nevada, Republican Donald Trump is now slightly leading Democrat Hillary Clinton in the race to the White House. That’s according to a new poll by Monmouth University. Our reporter Anh Gray has the details.(AUDIO-AT-LINK) Trump leads Clinton 44 to 42 percent and continues to be ahead with mostly white and male voters. Seth Richardson is a political reporter with the Reno Gazette-Journal. “It’s within the margins of error, but it shows what we’ve seen from previous polls over the last few weeks that Nevada is really, really close. I can’t stress enough how close it...

According to an article in this week’s Las Vegas Review Journal, the Guinn Center, an independent think tank, took a close look at the Question 1 gun control ballot initiative. The study had this to say about Question 1: [it could] be a challenge to enforce, if not altogether unenforceable, without a firearm registration scheme — especially in rural counties with limited resources; [a] claim made by the measure’s opponents seems to be supported by a 2001 Department of Justice survey of inmates, which found that less than 1 percent of the criminals obtained a gun through an unlicensed sale...
  • Momentum shifting Trump's way in Nevada, poll finds

Donald Trump is leading his rivals in Nevada, a state where Hillary Clinton was leading the pack in July, in a four-way Monmouth University poll released Wednesday. The Republican presidential nominee has 44% support of voters while his Democratic rival is at 42%, within the poll's margin of sampling error. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson stands at 8% and the state's "none of these candidates" option received 3% of support. "The race in Nevada is still tight, but the momentum has swung toward Trump," said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute. The poll was conducted September 11...

West Long Branch, NJ - The race for Nevada's electoral votes has flipped from two months ago, with Donald Trump now holding a slim 2 point lead over Hillary Clinton, whereas Clinton held a 4 point lead in July's Monmouth University Poll . In the U.S. Senate contest, Republican Joe Heck clings to a narrow 3 point lead over Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, virtually unchanged from his earlier 2 point lead. Among Silver State voters likely to participate in November's presidential election, 44% currently support Trump and 42% back Clinton. Another 8% intend to vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson and...

Bloomberg-backed piece falsely claims Question 1 will stop “convicted felons from buying a gun.” In a recent mail piece, Nevadans for Background Checks continues to peddle false claims in an attempt to pass a law that would criminalize virtually all private firearms transfers. The mail piece claims that Question 1, the Bloomberg gun control initiative, would stop “convicted felons from buying a gun without a background check.” Criminals, by definition, don’t follow the law. In this case, they will ignore the law and continue their criminal activities unaffected.

Barack's Back — and why Clinton needs him more than ever For the first time since the Democratic convention seven weeks ago, President Barack Obama is back stumping for Hillary Clinton. And she needs him more than ever — and we're not just talking about Clinton's absence from the campaign trail as she recovers from pneumonia. According to our most recent batch of NBC/WSJ/Marist state polls, Clinton is underperforming among key parts of the Obama coalition: Latinos and young voters. In our NBC/WSJ/Marist Nevada poll, for instance, Clinton leads Trump by a 65%-30% margin (+35) among Latinos, who made up...

As the presidential election has captured the national spotlight, there are many other matters to be aware of prior to Nov. 8. Congressional elections are particularly critical this year, as a shift in the U.S. Senate is a real possibility. That would mean that Chuck Schumer would become majority leader. Retiring Harry Reid was a moderate compared to Schumer. If the House changes hands, we would see Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House once more. Everyone should remember how well that worked. And then there are state elections, including five ballot measures dealing with firearm laws in Washington, Colorado,...

Donald Trump's campaign is planning its biggest ad buy to date — upward of $10 million on commercials airing over the next week or so. The campaign is expects the ads to air as soon as Monday in nine swing states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida, where the campaign has already been on the air, along with New Hampshire, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney lost eight of those nine states. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has so far been badly outspent by his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, and groups supporting her....

Last week, I noted that Nevada polling for Donald Trump painted a brighter picture for Republicans than national numbers suggested. The missteps that drove Trump’s numbers down nationwide didn’t seem to have impacted his standing in Nevada at all, and it appeared Hillary Clinton could lose a state Barack Obama won easily twice. Yesterday, Jon Ralston offered an in-depth look into the state of the race for Politico, as well as the fight to fill Harry Reid’s soon-to-be-vacant seat in the Senate. Ralston offered Republicans more good news than they’ve heard in a while, although it may not last: In...

The trooper pulled over a vehicle with three people shortly after midnight near U.S. 95 and Boulder Highway, according to investigators. A man in the vehicle jumped out of the vehicle and was pursued by the trooper. Boulder Highway is closed between U.S. 95 and Lamb Boulevard in either direction. Take a good look at the photo below of the audience at Hillary's Reno speech today. What is interesting, besides the SMALL size of the audience, is that a whole bunch of them are wearing AFGE shirts. That stands for American Federation of GOVERNMENT Employees. That's right, they work for the government. So the obvious question, since the speech was in the middle of the day, Reno time, is were those employees being paid while attending her speech? IOW, were they watching her speech on the taxpayer's dime?

Reno, Nevada (CNN) Donald Trump continues to trail in key swing states, but that has not been the case in Nevada, a state that helped him clinch the Republican nomination. Hillary Clinton arrives Thursday to campaign in this battleground state that Barack Obama easily carried twice as both public and internal campaign polls show a dead heat here. Trump's resilience in Nevada is surprising considering Clinton's many advantages here: her access to the strong organizational muscle of labor, a growing Latino population that has chafed at Trump's tone on immigration, and Obama's successes, which laid the groundwork for her run.
