Parents need to know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the adventures of Marvel's motley group of space outlaws first introduced in the smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy. Expect lots of interest from kids of all ages, but it's most appropriate for tweens and up. There's frequent fighting with weapons (swords, guns, and more), space chases/battles, executions that involve people being "spaced" (forced out of airlocks to die in the freezing cold of deep space), and more. Spoiler alert: A popular character dies. Language, while not frequent, can also be strong, with everything from "douche" and "d--k"...

Netflix's incredibly niche, personalised subgenres have long captivated movie nerds, from "Steamy Crime Movies from the 1970s" to "Period Pieces About Royalty Based on Real Life". The genres, based on a complicated algorithm that uses reams of data about users' viewing habits to recommend exactly what a particular user is into, number in the tens of thousands. (snip).... If you're logged into Netflix, enter www.netflix.com/browse/genre/XXXX into your browser's toolbar to bring up one of the thousands of genres in Netflix's library. "XXXX" is a series of digits - 1089 is "Mind-bending Movies", for example; while 354 is "Movies Starring Matthew...

Todd Rundgren isn’t bothered that some of his fans might avoid his concerts due to his politics. The 68-year-old musician and record producer conceded as much in an interview with Variety when asked about an incident in which a couple walked out of a concert in Los Angeles due to comments he made about President Donald Trump. “No,” Rundgren said when asked if it bothered him. “I’d say: If you’re a Trump supporter, don’t come to my show, because you won’t have a good time. And also, I don’t understand your frickin’ values. Because I’m not singing about that. If...

Hollywood may experience one of the worst slumps at the box office in the last decade this summer as Americans grow tired of the seemingly endless number of sequels and big-budget tentpoles churned out by the film industry. Multiple reports by the the Hollywood Reporter show box office revenues are on track to decline by five percent this summer season when compared with last year, and could drop by as much as ten percent. In real dollars, that could calculate out to a net loss of $450 million for Hollywood’s film industry, with summer earnings for movies expected at about...

The Danish cartoon controversy prompted a spectacular failure of will and principle in the West, the commentator tells Quadrant. 'First they come for the cartoonists, ultimately they move on to everybody else. The provocations ... get lamer and lamer. We are losing our world.' I’m cruising down New England country lanes that criss-cross towns that look like Norman Rockwell theme parks—on my way to find Mark Steyn—but I’m not allowed to tell you exactly where I am. My destination is the equivalent of a military bunker—a hidden television studio where, later today, they’ll be installing the concert grand piano Steyn...

In the closing minutes of Saturday Night Fever, the following events occur: A racist injustice, an attempted date rape, a gang rape, a horrific accidental death with an element of suicide, and (not least) a nighttime ride on the disco-era New York City subway. The film concludes with the hero getting rejected by his lady. Naturally it was one of the biggest hits of 1977. Baby Boomers jammed theaters to see Saturday Night Fever (which earned the equivalent of over $350 million in today’s dollars) and Gen-Xers (like me) either sneaked in to see its forbidden R-rated depravities or...

Let’s not underplay this: Emma Watson just became the Rosa Parks of today’s Hollywood. Declining to honor gender demarcations just as Parks once declined to observe racial ones, Watson, holding a goofy simulacrum of a bucket of popcorn, gave a heartfelt speech Sunday night when she accepted a gender-neutral “Best Actor” award — open to males, females, and everyone in between — at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. The “non-binary performer” Asia Kate Dillon, of the TV series Billions, presented the award to Watson, honored for her work in this spring’s remake of Beauty and the Beast. Dillon hailed...

Legendary Shack Shakers - Blood on the Blue Grass Way down south in a Kentuck' town Where all of the stubble fields grow One boy did rise with the devil in his eyes Whose heart was dark as Westfield coal Heart was dark as Westfield coal Roderick Ferrell and the Wendorf girl Knelt down upon a darkened grave He drew his dagger down and the red ran to the ground And they licked along the bloody blade Licked along the bloody blade Blood-red blood on the blue, blue grass It cries from hallowed hunting ground 'Twas the midnight curse of...

What does the typical Billy Joel fan look like? It’s a serious question. We can, I think to at least a small degree of accuracy, guess what the typical Sex Pistols fan looked like back in their heyday, or the typical Spice Girls fan in theirs. But, what about Billy Joel? His music is so nondescript, so family-restaurant friendly, so bland, so cheesy, that its lack of concrete identity aside from its popularity and its blandness makes it difficult to imagine just who buys his albums, just who packs the sold out arenas. Let’s think about it this way perhaps...
