Chet Baker was a leading jazz musician in the 1950s, playing trumpet and providing vocals. Baker died in 1988, yet he is about to add a new claim to fame as the lead plaintiff in possibly the largest copyright infringement case in Canadian history. His estate, which still owns the copyright in more than 50 of his works, is part of a massive class-action lawsuit that has been underway for the past year. As my weekly technology law column (Toronto Star version, homepage version) notes, the infringer has effectively already admitted owing at least $50 million and the full claim...

Norris’ flat onscreen persona has spawned an ironic Internet movement, and now, a book by Norris himself. Sean Macaulay analyzes the strange afterlife of the worst actor in action. It's official. Chuck Norris can tame anything, even his own meme. The iconic action star's new book, The Official Chuck Norris Fact Book, is Norris’ personal selection of Internet-spawned “facts” about himself, and it's already the bestselling martial arts book in the country. An unofficial Chuck Norris fact book—The Truth About Chuck Norris: 400 Facts About the World's Greatest Human—did have the nerve to appear two years ago, but as any...

When Tiger Woods was brought to the Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, Fla., his condition was more serious than previously reported. According to a person with knowledge of Woods’ hospital admission, the star golfer had to be admitted directly to the hospital’s intensive care unit, where he was immediately intubated and his breathing stabilized. Also, there’s clarification about the police interview with Woods’ neighbors, who called 911. At the time of the 911 call, neighbor Jarius Lavar Adams told dispatchers that Woods was asleep on the lawn, snoring. “Although the body can snore in any state of unconsciousness, it’s unlikely...

The grandmother of Ekaterina Ivanova, the girlfriend of Ronnie Wood, has told the Rolling Stones guitarist to leave her granddaughter alone. "That Ronnie - what a nightmare!," said Mrs Ivanova, who is closer in age to the Rolling Stone than her granddaughter. She threatened to "get even" with him if he hurt her granddaughter. "She is climbing her way to hell," she added.

Here is what President Obama said about Springsteen: Finally, we honor the quiet kid from Jersey ... who grew up to become the rock 'n' roll laureate of a generation. For in the life of our country only a handful of people have tapped the full power of music to tell the real American story -- with honesty; from the heart; and one of those people is Bruce Springsteen... It's no wonder that his tours are not so much concerts, but communions. There's a place for everybody -- the sense that no matter who you are or what you do,...

All Hail the iPod touch By Om Malik December 6, 2009 As the competition for smartphone domination starts to heat up, it is becoming increasingly clear that the iPod touch is Apple’s ace up its sleeve, and according to a report by Flurry, a San Francisco-based mobile analytics company, 24 million iPod touches represent about 40 percent of the total 58 million iPhone OS devices. From the time I first laid my hands on the iPod touch, I have been a big fan of it — after all, it is just like an iPhone except that it has more storage, is...

Bookwalter Apple may have to fend off a number of competitors for the iPhone’s crown of smartphone dominance, but one area where there seems to be comparatively little competition is the roost ruled by the iPod touch. Based upon a report by Flurry, a San Francisco mobile analytics company, there are 24 million iPod touches in use, which represent 40% of the total 58 million iPhone OS devices, according to Gigaom’s Om Malik. After all, the iPod touch has one big advantage over the...

Today was supposed to be the day that Rachel Uchitel and celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred came out to the press with an official statement. Actually, it was supposed to happen right now. Well, that's been canceled last minute. Hmm. There are speculations that Tiger Woods was in communicado with Uchitel as recently as last night, and sources say Tiger's representatives spoke with her for 30 minutes before coming to some sort of "agreement". Does that translate into dough? Gloria Allred is not known to cancel press conferences, so this deal may very well have been enormous.

Keane, who survived non- Hodgkins lymphoma diagnosed when he was 80, died of renal failure Saturday in an assisted living home in Hollywood, said his son, Tom Keane. "He was like the original independent record man in those days," said Tom Keane, a songwriter and record producer. "He was the guy going out and finding talent and developing it and getting it out to the masses." A clarinet player...

Or so sources say, although this report does jibe conspicuously with the details of that blogospheric catnip Us Weekly tossed out last week. Remember that dream I had about debating social security with an Orion girl? This is better: “[Jolie thinks] President Obama is a great communicator but not interested in issues outside the United States,” says a Hollywood insider close to the Oscar-winning actress. “Angelina has worked very hard to get first-person accounts of what is going on in the world with her briefings from the UN, [while] Brad is a ‘Johnny Come Lately.’” Jolie even thinks Obama will...

Washington, D.C. (December 1, 2009) -- DIRECTV is now running a series of clever TV commercials depicting a fictional cable TV company discussing ways to combat the satcaster's HDTV programming lineup. The commercials, which feature actors who often star in film spoofs by director Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show), smartly uses humor to portray the 'cable guys' as dimwits who don't understand how to provide more HD channels. (Note: Guest directed the commercials.) However, in DIRECTV's latest commercial, the satcaster seems to take the viewer himself for a dimwit, someone that it can bamboozle into thinking he...

Robin Williams went out on a limb defending Chicago's Olympic bid, and now Rio de Janeiro wants to sue him. Williams told David Letterman during an appearance on the Late Show that he wasn't surprised Rio won the bid instead of Chicago. "Chicago sent Oprah and Michelle Obama," Williams said. "Rio sent 50 Strippers and a pound of blow. It wasn't really fair, you know?" Williams' comments have been replayed several times on news shows across Brazil on Tuesday, while city mayor Eduardo Paes says Williams is envious of Rio's achievement.

"I don't have any interest in acting anymore," Baldwin, 51, told "Men's Journal" in an interview for its December issue. Alec Baldwin, the US actor, has said he has lost interest in acting and considers his film career a failure. "I consider my entire movie career a complete failure," he told the magazine. We ca never allow it to be only what it is. Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer in the history of the game. We can’t stop there. No, he’s also the world’s greatest human. And to suggest anything less means you’re the one with the problem. Hmmm, perhaps you even have a problem with the color of Tiger’s skin. Team Tiger, you may recall, dropped that hint, early. So if you know what’s good for you, stick with the story, especially you TV guys: Greatest golfer, greatest human. Got it? Now don’t forget it. But the world’s greatest golfer has...

LONDON (AP) - In the contest, she finished second. But on the charts, she's number one. Susan Boyle's debut record, "I Dreamed A Dream," entered the British album chart in the top spot Sunday. The 48-year-old Scottish songstress famously finished second on "Britain's Got Talent," but the variety show launched a career that has seen her win success on both sides of the Atlantic. Millions of people have seen an online clip of Boyle auditioning for the judges. Wearing a somewhat dowdy frock and with a halo of untidy hair, Boyle told Simon Cowell that her dream was to be...

"But the ball was rolling and it couldn't be stopped."Some...

I have been listening to and collecting Christmas music for over 30 years now. During this time, I have collected well over 3,000 songs. I consider practically every song in my collection to be of high quality and in the spirit of the Christmas season. My point is that there is a huge library out there of excellent Christmas music. My question is, why is so much of what we hear on the radio, at the shopping malls, and even in the movies, so horribly lame? Already there are many radio stations (including two on Sirius satellite radio) playing Christas...
