You're the only person I know who might appreciate this old story and film.
I love it because I love NYC. NY is the heart of America.
I believe this and I grew up in a tiny town in South Georgia.

Thank you! Yes, Steiger was the first Marty. This was shown on tv years ago and I saw it. Nancy Marchand - Mrs. Soprano - plays the spinster.

WHAT! Rod Steiger as MARTY?
I see Rod Steiger as Mr Joyboy!

I watched this a few months ago. I am on a mission to watch every Best Picture winner.
Enjoyable film.

Wonderful movie. Just saw it on TCM. Only in America could a Jewish intellectual (Chayefsky) from the Bronx write such a moving story about a humble Italian American butcher.
What a great actor Earnest Borgnine was. He was a tough guy in From Here to Eternity and then went on to win an Academy Award for Marty.

Oh, it’s a very sweet movie. Ernie is terrific.

Before the 60s the Bronx was mostly Jews and Italians. Arthur Avenue in the Bronx is the real little italy of NY, the official one is just for tourists.

Thanks for sharing. It never mentioned what neighborhood the movie was set in but are lots of clues. I always assumed it was Fordham.
It is ironic is that a lot of those neighborhoods after WWII were true "worker's paradises" and great incubators for families. Then LBJ's great society came along in the 60's ruined them.
If that movie was remade today if would be in some hipster neighborhood and Marty would turn gay at the end instead of calling the girl.
Did you know Betsy Blair was blacklisted?

This is a
kinescope of a
live telecast! They did so many live dramas back then. There was no video tape. Amazing.

Earnest was one of those actors that improved every film he was in.

Just added Marty to my Netflix queue. Thanks for the recommendation.

As a born and raised NY City boy, a few years after the TV version, we had to read “Marty” in English class. I did not have a part, but one of my favorite lines was.....
“I’ll never forgive LaGuardia for cutting out burlesque outta New York City”

Surprised the first time I saw the film version of “Marty” by the actor playing Ralph, the title character’s best friend. It was Frank Sutton, best known as Sergeant Carter on “Gomer Pyle, USMC.” Sutton was born and raised in Tennessee, but fit in very well as a New Yorker. The film was Sutton’s big break, but he isn’t listed in the credits.
Another familiar TV face in the cast is Jerry Paris, the neighbor on the Dick Van Dyke Show, who became a prolific TV director.

The movie version with Borgnine was on TCM just this afternoon - wonder how long it took Ernie’s hand to recover after he smacked the bus sign in his joy after finally meeting a girl who returned his interest.....

That was the best performance ever given by Ernie.
He established his acting chops once and for all.
