  • Tchaikovsky's impressions of the American treasury

    Tchaikovsky's diaries ^ | 5/1/1891 | Peter Tchaikovsky
New York, 1 May 1891 — "Then Mayer procured permission for me to see the vaults of the public treasury, where hundreds of millions in gold, silver, new banknotes and security bonds are stored. Exceptionally obliging yet important officials guided us to these vaults, opening the monumental doors to this mysterious castle, with an equally mysterious spinning of metal knobs. Bags of gold rested like sacks of flour in a barn, in beautiful, clean, electrically-illuminated chambers. I was given a stack of new banknotes worth 10 million dollars to hold. Finally I understood why gold and silver are not in...

Carnivorous fans flocking to Madison Square Garden to see rocker Morrissey next month will be forced to go vegan or go hungry — because the arena is giving in to his demands to ban meat at the performance. The former frontman for the British band “The Smiths” — which had a smash-hit album called “Meat is Murder” — is scheduled to perform June 27. Concertgoers craving a burger or hot dog will be asking, “Where’s the beef” after the singer revealed that the Garden had agreed that only strictly vegan foods would be served during the show. So no meat...

  • Station suspends DJ over posting in Baltimore man's death

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A radio station has suspended a disc jockey over his online posting about the arrest record of a Baltimore man whose fatal injury in police custody led to rioting. Officials at FM station WAMO 100, which bills itself as Pittsburgh's No. 1 choice for urban music, said Wednesday the posting by Mike Jax was "too controversial" and partly inaccurate. They also said listeners had complained and threatened to harm Jax, whose real name is Mike Jackson....

Kingsmen lead singer Jack Ely, famous for the single Louie Louie has died age 71 Jack Ely, the singer known for Louie Louie, the low-budget recording that became one the most famous songs of the 20th century, died at his home in Redmond, Oregon, after a long battle with an illness. He was 71. His son, Sean Ely, confirmed the death Tuesday. 'Because of his religious beliefs, we're not even sure what (the illness) was,' he said. —— In addition to the song's fame, Ely's incoherent singing also made it one of the most misunderstood. The FBI was so mystified...

Jack Ely, the Portland guitarist and singer best known for the Kingsmen's 1960s hit "Louie, Louie," has died, his son told KOIN news this morning. In 1963, as the story goes, The Kingsmen recorded "Louie, Louie" in a studio at Northwest 13th Avenue and Burnside. Ely, the only band member who knew all the words to Richard Berry's calypso-meets-R&B song that day had just had his braces tightened and couldn't enunciate clearly. The producer moved the microphone away from him, capturing the music but muffling the words. Ely's incomprehensible vocal track famously spawned an FBI investigation into whether the Portland-bred...

I rarely record cover tunes, but this one is worthy of special attention. In 1989, the British band Napalm Death released their magnum opus "You Suffer". While attaining a cult following, this sorely underrated work never achieved the mainstream recognition it so richly deserved. Today, by doing this cover version, I hope to start changing that. No thanks are necessary; my reward is to see justice done. For a free MP3 download of my version of "You Suffer," click here. If you wish to hear the original, you may do so here. Earlier this year, a new law went into effect in Canada that required ISPs to report instances of suspected piracy among their customers, the so-called “notice and notice” system. The result is that a bunch of foreign companies–third parties not affiliated with the actual rights holders of the material that may (or may not) being pirated–have been sending emails to Canadians demanding that they pay up now or face massive legal consequences. It’s been reported that hundreds of thousands of these warnings have been sent to Canadians. First things first: Canadians are NOT obligated to pay. Demanding a cash settlement...

The man behind such classics as "Keep on Pushing" and "Superfly" will be the focus of upcoming projects, including new recordings, DVDs & memorabilia. Curtis Mayfield’s storied music career will mark its 60th anniversary next year. To celebrate the occasion -- and Mayfield’s still influential legacy -- the late soul icon’s estate is ramping up multiple projects. The slate includes a website, new recordings, merchandise, DVDs and a documentary. “It’s taken some time to put things in order,” says Altheida Mayfield, Mayfield's widow. “Now it’s time to celebrate and re-evaluate his legacy; to let him touch people’s hearts again. But...

I need some advice. I have a rather large collection of vinyl records that I plan to record to an external computer hard drive. The record player that I have uses i-tunes to process each cut onto the computer. Does anyone on here have any experience with this that could maybe recommend a different/better idea to handle saving everything on to the hard drive. I am looking for flexibility in moving the finished product between computers. This is going to be a pretty long-term project, what with cigar and bourbon breaks, and I want to get it as near right...

For all of us, we have a musical sweet spot in our lives. It happens roughly between the ages of 14 and 24, from the time we enter high school to the time life begins to intrude with its demands of jobs, mortgages and families. During that period, almost nothing is more important to us than music. It not only becomes a personal obsession but something we use to proclaim our identity to the rest of the world. But after about 24, we just don’t have the time (and often the interest) to indulge in our musical passions as much...
