On Wednesday, the National Geographic Society announced that they would be altering the global map to include Crimea in the map of Russia after Crimea’s secession from Ukraine is legally finalized. On Tuesday, National Geographic editorial leadership, led by geographer Juan Jose Valdes, determined that maps used by the organization must show “the world as it is, not as people would like it to be…As you can only surmise, sometimes our maps are not received in a positive light by some individuals who want to see the world in a different light.”

Yesterday we published a set of maps that came from a survey about what Americans think of other states. Essentially, each respondent was asked to answer a question with a state that wasn't their own, like which state is the drunkest, the nicest, the most arrogant. We looked at the data and decided to compress the 22 maps into one map. (click to enlarge) On this map, every state that won a superlative — first place in any question — has its claims to fame in bolded print. The FBI and Seattle authorities were investigating a Nevada man who was arrested after he was spotted on the University of Washington campus in a stolen truck carrying multiple explosive devices, stolen firearms and body armor, police said Thursday. The man was arrested a few blocks away after a police pursuit near Seattle Children's Hospital late Wednesday, said John Vinson, chief of the University of Washington police. Iowa's biggest newspaper is under fire after publishing a map that showed which public school districts have police or security -- and which ones don't. Critics said the Des Moines Register, which quickly pulled the interactive map off of its website, was making it easy for a deranged killer to know where to launch a Sandy Hook-style attack. "What they did yesterday was provide a shopping list for every nut job in Iowa," WHO radio host Simon Conway, who said his phone lines "blew up" as soon as he began discussing the map with his audience, told Fox News Channel....
