The electoral map divides the country neatly into blue states and red states. But blue states include vast conservative stretches; and most red states harbor liberal enclaves, too. In recent years, as partisan polarization has grown, some political minorities in these disaffected areas have proposed a radical solution: state partition.
It has happened before. Maine, for instance, was once part of Massachusetts. And while none of the current movements really has a shot, the eleven instances mapped here (including that to grant the District of Columbia statehood) have at least attracted the support of elected officials.
What would happen if all of them succeeded? Each new state would get two senators and its share of electoral college votes. We ran the numbers and recalculated the 2012 presidential race.
In this bizarro United States, the GOP would have a structural advantage in the expanded Senate, and Barack Obama would have had a tighter fight against Mitt Romney in the electoral college (which he won, in reality, 332206).
If Republicans really want to screw with the electoral map, some argue they could break up Texas into five states according to the states terms of annexation. Democrats, meanwhile, can dream that Texas makes good on Governor Rick Perrys threat to secede from the union altogether.

Haha. I love how all of Illinois has seceded from Chicago.
I have a question for Illinois Freepers.
What would happen if Chicago had a financial meltdown like Detroit (not an unlikely prospect looking at the numbers)? What if Chicago experienced a Detroit-like exodus?
Would Illinois be the next West Virginia?
And if they didn’t have the Hispanic vote they would probably lose CA, CO, NM, and FL
Oh be still my beating heart! If only ...
No rhyme nor reason to the map.
For instance, aside from Detroit, Michigan is solidly in GOP hands. It should actually look a lot more like Illinois on the map and probably redder.
I had no idea that there was such nice big red chunk in southwest Oregon Maybe that is where I should retire.
Michigan isn’t quite right. Either the Western side of Michigan would secede from the Easter side of the state or we’d try to secede from the cities.
Maybe we’d all just move to the U.P. Problem with that, after seeing the National Park shut down and maps of said shut down, is that there is LOTS of Federal land above the bridge.
The U.P. of Michigan has never had a serious secessionist movement. It has always been more of a stunt like the Conch Republic, rather than a real movement.
Whoops, didn’t see your post. We agree on the secede from Detroit idea. :)
Yet Oregon still elects dirtbags like Merkley. If only there was some way to clean out the big cities in America.
Looked good to me, I mean we can all dream, can't we.
You think the state of Jefferson would be a red state? Weed would probably be the capital of it.
Ideally, America would be divided so that all the concentrated Democrat parasite nests (”cities”) comprise one nation, and the rest of the country the other.
If we got rid of Philly, Chicago, NYC and LA, Democrats would never win another national election.
It’s that simple.
Let Mexico have “Baja Arizona.” White people can’t go into most of that area anyway (by order of Obastard’s DHS). The only city is Tucson, so the rest of AZ would turn bright red with only Flag and Tempe as bastions of liberal filth.
You are correct. Population density plays a much bigger role that we have accounted for.
