NEXT month, the Temple of Baal will come to Times Square. Reproductions of the 50-foot arch that formed the temple’s entrance are to be installed in New York and in London, a tribute to the 2,000-year-old structure that the Islamic State destroyed last year in the Syrian town of Palmyra. The group’s rampage through Palmyra, a city that reached its peak in the second and third century A.D., enraged the world, spurring scholars and conservationists into action. Numerous nongovernmental organizations are now cataloging and mapping damaged cultural heritage sites in the region. It will be uncanny and thrilling to see...

Immigration is the new "No Nukes/Save the Whales" movement, only with more body bags. After the mass murder committed by Muslims in San Bernardino, which came on the heels of the mass murder committed by Muslims in Paris, Donald Trump proposed a moratorium on Muslim immigration. Explaining the idea on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," he talked about how Muslim immigration was infecting Europe: "Look at what happened in Paris, the horrible carnage. ... We have places in London and other places that are so radicalized that the police are afraid for their own lives. We have to be very smart and...

The Queen refuses to come to London to meet President Barack Obama next month. Instead, accompanied by his security circus, he’ll trundle to Windsor in his bomb-proof, seven-ton limo for lunch. He’s due to stand alongside the PM and urge Britain to stay in the EU. ‘But he’d be well advised not to give a pro-EU sermon over lunch after the row about the Queen supporting Brexit,’ says my source. (Photo) Princess Anne will be at Cheltenham today to present the Gold Cup, sprinkling royal stardust on the festival’s incontinent punters. Unlike Ascot, where the Gold Cup was renamed to

LONDON — The mayor of London has a simple message for President Obama over Britain’s upcoming referendum on membership in the European Union: Butt out. In a strikingly combative article published Monday, the flamboyant mayor, Boris Johnson, accused the United States of “exorbitant hypocrisy†in urging the United Kingdom to vote to stay in the bloc, given that the former defends its own sovereignty with “hysterical vigilance.†Johnson's strident criticism in the Telegraph newspaper comes amid reports that Obama will visit the United Kingdom next month and will urge Britons to vote to remain in the 28-nation E.U. The London...

When I heard from the Baron today that our current president is planning to go to Britain to make a case to the public for staying in the European Union, I was momentarily stunned. What happened to ‘leading from behind’ and letting other countries handle their own affairs? By now we’re all jaded by this president. He does nothing for free, nothing in which there is not some eventual pay-off to him. So sticking his nose into Britain’s affairs should come as no surprise, given his track record of the last interminable years of his time in office. Or maybe...

In London, the number of rented homes has just edged past the number that are owner-occupied, according to a report out this month. For the U.K.’s biggest city, this shift from owning to renting is, it seems, just the beginning. According to another new report, the ratio of renters to homeowners in London is expected to be yet greater by 2025, by which time the proportion of renters will have reached 60%. This shift from ownership to shorter-term rental tenancies, one mirrored by trends in the largest North American cities, is likely to have a number of consequences. Being able...

Iran row looms over release of Fowzi Badavi Nejad Oct.10, 2008 The only surviving terrorist from the 1980 siege of the Iranian Embassy in London is to be freed within days amid fears that his release will trigger a diplomatic row with Iran. Fowzi Badavi Nejad will be released and allowed to stay in Britain, but Iran wants him returned to Tehran to face trial for the murder of two hostages killed during the siege. The Foreign Office has failed to win assurances that Nejad would not suffer torture or death if he were returned on his release after serving...

LONDON — A plane was taken out of service by British Airways after bed bugs were found on board. The airline says two of the parasitic insects, which feed on people's blood, were found. "Whenever any report of bed bugs is received, we launch a thorough investigation and, if appropriate, remove the aircraft from service and use specialist teams to treat it — this happened in this instance," a spokeswoman for the airline told Mashable.

The NFL are 'on track' to deliver a permanent UK-based American football franchise within the next six years, spokesman Mark Waller has insisted. Since 2007, London's Wembley Stadium has been home to the National Football League's International Series by hosting regular-season matches. Jacksonville Jaguars ‒ who are owned by Shahid Khan, the Fulham owner ‒ have played a game a season there since 2013 and now a permanent move for an NFL team appears to be likely.

Politicians could face an alcohol ban as the new offices they will be moving into are ruled by Sharia law.MPs are to be rehoused temporarily in Richmond House while Parliament undergoes much-needed repair. But the building, 91 metres down the road, was transferred from the British Government to wealthy Middle Eastern businessmen and banks under an Islamic bond scheme, called Sukuk, in 2014 in George Osborne's bid to make the UK a global hub for Islamic finance. The lease terms stipulate the building is governed under Islamic law - which includes the banning of alcohol on the activities. A Whitehall...

Controversial anti-Israel politician and London Mayoral candidate George Galloway has been accused of "fascism," after refusing a man entry to his events because he is pro-Israel. Jewish activist Ben Gross of the Israel Advocacy Movement had attempted to enter a public talk by Galloway last week, but was rejected and physically blocked from entering. If Gross was under any doubt as to why he was turned away, Galloway himself quickly made it clear to his audience that it was his pro-Israel sympathies which made him a persona non grata. ...

Two brothers behind a popular brand of craft chocolate have apologized for 'misleading' customers after they were accused of 'defrauding the public' by allegedly covering-up how some of their bars used to be made. Rick and Michael Mast, who both sport impressive beards, launched Mast Brothers chocolate in New York in 2007. Their range, which costs up to $23 (£16) a bar, is now on sale at flagship stores in Brooklyn, New York, and London's trendy east end.

A mosque frequented by the leader of the airline plot terrorist cell has been a recruiting ground for extremists for more than 20 years. The Queen’s Road mosque in Walthamstow, northeast London, where Abdulla Ahmed Ali met his associates, is controlled by the ultraorthodox Tablighi Jamaat. Intelligence services around the world believe that Tablighi’s fundamentalism makes some of its followers easy prey for terrorist recruiters. Two decades ago the same mosque was hosting talks by followers of Omar Bakri Mohammed, one of the first Islamic clerics in Britain to preach jihad. The disclosure of the mosque’s history indicates that, despite...
