African golden cats are hardly ever photographed in the wild. In their rare, camera-trap cameos, the cats are usually seen licking their spotted fur or innocuously inspecting the unfamiliar lens. But recently, scientists captured a much more dynamic scene: a golden cat crashing a party of red colobus monkeys in Uganda.

Bart the cat should be renamed zombie cat after he was hit by a car, buried and then crawled out of his grave five days later. The cat appeared to be lifeless and his owner, Ellis Hutson, buried him in a shallow grave. Five days later, the cat showed up in...

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WMBF) - A Lowcountry woman got quite the surprise when her Boston Terrier began nursing orphan kittens. Shannon Williams said her daughter found the litter of kittens in the woods behind their home in Mount Pleasant. After bringing the litter inside, Memory, her 5-year-old Boston Terrier, began nurturing and cuddling with the days-old kittens. “We laid the kittens on a dog bed, and [Memory] cuddled with them,” Williams recalled. Meanwhile, Williams went to the pet supply store for milk replacement. She said she didn't need the supplement long, “One week later, [Memory's] milk came in.” Memory had...

Consumer doggie DNA testing is old hat at this point, having been around since 2007. But cat-lovers who wish to decipher their pet's breed are out of luck -- no such tests exist for felines. That fact reflects the state of the underlying science. Since the first full dog genome was sequenced ten years ago, geneticists have identified hundreds of genes behind canine diseases and physical traits. By comparison, just a handful of such genes have been identified in cats. But a group of geneticists is working to close this gap by sequencing 99 domestic cats. This week the researchers...

We had a serious cat issue tonight, and I'd like to post this so that others can avoid it. As some of you know, we acquired two young cats over the past couple of weeks. They've adjusted really well - they are male siblings; but something happened tonight. A friend of ours, another Cat person, gave us a bag of toys for the cats. There were lots of nice toys in there, but one of them was a very small, very silky mouse - small enough to fit into a cat's mouth (about an inch long). "They" make cat toys...

MADELINE WEINSTEIN was reaching for the top of the shelves at Meow Parlour, New York’s new cat cafe, going for the ultimate prize: Roger, the most antisocial animal in the place. Down below, on floor level, nine other cats roamed, batting at toys, leaping exuberantly, bumping heads affectionately against the outstretched hands of customers. Roger remained aloof.

In December, Pope Francis got the attention of pet owners everywhere when he was quoted as saying, “Paradise is open to all of God’s creatures.” Alas, media outlets, including The New York Times, confused the remarks and the circumstances under which they were made. The pope had actually made a broader comment about heaven during an event in November. The quotation itself was reportedly taken from remarks made years ago by Pope Paul VI.Still, the attention led to renewed interest in a longstanding theological discussion about pets and the afterlife. Questions about the religious status of animals have always been...

Eat your heart out, Lassie! Masha, a long-haired tabby cat, saved the life of a baby abandoned in the streets of Russia — after she climbed into the box he was discarded in and kept him warm, health officials said. “The baby had only been outside for a few hours and thanks to Masha … he was not damaged by the experience,” a hospital spokesman told Central European News. The whiskered hero even meowed to get the attention of a passerby.

New York State Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, known for showing her claws against animal cruelty, is pouncing on a new topic: cat declawing. Rosenthal, who represents district 67, mainly covering Manhattan's Upper West Side, has penned a bill that would ban removing cats' claws unless necessary for medical reasons, the New York Daily News reports. The bill has not yet been introduced to the state Senate, but it has been backed by the Humane Society of New York. "Too often, people think that declawing is a simple surgery that removes a cat's nails—the equivalent of having your fingernails trimmed. Sadly, this...

Hi; I just joined the Kitty-Ping list. I have what is kind of an urgent question about CATS, and our FRiend 'Slings and Arrows' suggested that I post it to the larger group. We adopted a little cat, Leroy, a week ago; he’s about 8 months old and still very kittenish. He's adapted to us and our household very well; but we think he needs a cat companion. We have the choice of adopting one of his brothers, from the same litter; or adopting a female cat who is about 1-1/2 years old, who has already had a litter. I...

A British soldier “shakes hands” with a kitten on a snowy bank, Neulette, 1917. In the Christmas truce film Joyeux Noël, a cat runs back and forth between the enemy trenches to soldiers that feed it. One names the cat Felix and the other Nestor, and when the two meet in No Man’s Land during thet ruce, a sweet argument ensues between the two men over whose cat it is and what is, in fact, its name. The director of the film, Carion, drew on a real life story of a cat who did this during the truce and was...
