Sidney Crosby led Canada to its first hockey world championship title since 2007 Sunday with a goal and an assist in a dominant 6-1 victory over defending champion Russia in the final. Hall of Famer Marcel Pronovost, who spent 15 years with the Detroit Red Wings before capping his playing career with a five-year run in Toronto, has died. He was 84. Pronovost won the Stanley Cup five times as a player and recorded 88 goals and 257 assists in 1,206 regular-season games. He moved into coaching after his retirement and had served as a scout for the New Jersey Devils since 1990.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 94-year-old physician who served as team doctor for five U.S. men's Olympic hockey squads has suffered serious injuries in an attack while visiting his wife's grave. KMSP-TV reported that George Nagobads was mugged Sunday afternoon at the Crystal Lake Cemetery and left bleeding from the head. A witness says Nagobads managed to get back in his car and drive away. The unidentified witness says he saw a young man looking through a wallet near the mausoleum before fleeing. Nagobads was the University of Minnesota men's hockey team physician for 34 years until his retirement in 1992....

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – It's been more than three decades since his landmark goal became the centerpiece of the U.S. Olympic hockey team's Miracle on Ice. For 60-year-old Mike Eruzione, it still seems like only yesterday. Eruzione says he's doing something every week that's associated with 1980, the year he scored a game-winning goal against the Soviet Union in the medal round at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. It was a bunch of college kids matched up against one of the best teams in hockey history. The United States triumphed with an improbable comeback 35 years ago.

Former NHL defenseman Steve Montador died at age 35, as first reported by TVA’s Renaud Lavoie. The Mississauga News reports that he was found dead at his home at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. Police do not suspect foul play. Montador last performed in the NHL for the Chicago Blackhawks in 2011-12. He played 571 regular season games spread out between the Calgary Flames, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins and Blackhawks. FARGO – A 27-year-old man accused of driving a Zamboni while drunk at a high school hockey game had a blood-alcohol level of over three times the legal limit, police said. A preliminary breath test showed that Steven James Anderson had a blood-alcohol level of 0.30 percent on Friday night, said Lt. Joel Vettel, a Fargo police spokesman. The limit in North Dakota is 0.08 percent.

J.P. Parise, a former Minnesota North Star and a central figure in Minnesota hockey, died Wednesday night surrounded by loved ones. He was 73. Parise was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in February. He is survived by his wife Donna and two children, Jordan and Zach.
