While Gopher fans focus on Thursday’s bowl game, Governor Mark Dayton is thinking ahead to next season. The governor doesn’t want the Gophers starting any more home games before noon. In fact, he’d like to see a law in Minnesota making those early starts illegal.

As Americans trimmed the tree last week and hung their stockings with care, many viewers turned away from TV screens. During a week of mostly reruns, total prime-time viewership of the Big Four networks dipped by 25 percent from the week before. The team TCU played today beat the best in the SEC?? Gained over 400 yards against the best scoring defense in SEC? Allowed only 3 points even after coughing up 4 turnovers? What a joke the SEC is. TCU lost as a visitor in overtime to the #5 ranked team in the country. Looks like politics is taking over in the sporting world as there is no way TCU should not be in the championship hunt.

’m a New York Giants fan. So besides erecting a makeshift shrine to Odell Beckham Jr. and soaking in schadenfreude at the expense of Philadelphia Eagles fans, I haven’t found the last couple of weeks of the NFL regular season super interesting. And yet, many teams that were eliminated from the playoffs appeared to pack stadiums – despite frigid temperatures and the promise of mediocre football. That prompted an argument over this question: Who goes to the meaningless NFL games at the end of the season and why?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Texas A&M student assistant coach Michael Richardson was sent home early from the Aggies' appearance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl after hitting West Virginia players in the first half of Texas A&M's 45-37 win on Monday at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Cameras showed Richardson striking West Virginia players who ventured out of bounds during the first half on two separate occasions. He used his elbow to strike Mountaineer cornerback Daryl Worley in the back of the head and shoved running back Andrew Buie in another incident.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has reportedly accepted Michigan's offer to return to his alma mater and become the Wolverines' next head coach, according to CSNBayArea.com, which reports that Harbaugh will be announced at a press conference in Ann Arbor on Tuesday morning. Jason Cole of Bleacher Report and writer John U. Bacon, author of several books about Michigan football, also reported on Saturday that Harbaugh was expected to accept the Michigan job.

Maybe Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel's rookie season will be remembered as a bump on the road to a great career, or as a sign that he was one of the most-hyped busts of this century. Whichever, it's officially just a memory now. The Browns have already ruled Manziel out of their Week 17 game because of a hamstring injury, meaning his season is over. Browns coach Mike Pettine said in his Monday press conference that the hamstring injury was "pretty significant" and would take several weeks to heal, according to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

The Chicago Bears made a heck of a statement this offseason. They gave quarterback Jay Cutler a $126 million contract. The team was telling everyone that even though Cutler was a mediocre quarterback for eight years, the ninth would be different. He would be paid like he was on the same level as the game's best quarterbacks. And now, 14 games later, they’re benching Cutler for Jimmy Clausen.

t's not often that a power-conference school should hire a coach straight from FCS, but Coastal Carolina's Joe Moglia isn't most coaches. The former CEO of TD Ameritrade, Moglia stepped back into coaching in 2009 as a volunteer assistant at Nebraska. In 2011, he became the head coach of the United Football League's Omaha Nighthawks, and in 2012, he got his first job as a college head coach at Coastal Carolina.
