A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck north Oklahoma City early on New Year's Day, the latest in a series of temblors in the area in recent days that's prompted state regulators to call for more restrictions on oil and gas operators. No injuries and only minor damage were reported with the quake, which struck at 5:39 a.m. Friday near Edmond, about 16 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. ...

Oklahoma had more earthquakes in 2015 than every state combined, including Hawaii but excluding massive Alaska. Forty-nine U.S. states recorded a total of 1,586 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or greater. Oklahoma recorded 857 quakes. That leaves the other 48 U.S. states with a combined total of 729.

Oklahoma is now the No. 1 earthquake area in the world, an Oklahoma Corporation Commission spokesman said Monday. Spokesman Matt Skinner said the state is unique in terms of frequency. "We have had 15 (earthquakes) in Medford since 5 o'clock Saturday morning," he noted. "We've got an earthquake issue." Skinner said the world is going through a seismic phase. "Oklahoma is absolutely unique in terms of the number of earthquakes we've had," he said. Jim Palmer, OCC director of public information and manager of consumer education, said Oklahoma is unique in North America. He said there are other parts of...

As I walked into the department this bright brisk morning, coffee cheerily in hand, the live global seismogram display in the atrium caught my eye with an alarming event that had just happened during my bike ride into work. *gasp* that looks bad *gasp* that looks bad BIG earthquake, somewhere in the vicinity of Central/Southern Asia. Indeed, an earthquake deep (>200 km) beneath the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan had shaken a huge swath of Central and South Asia. The great depth of the earthquake meant less extreme shaking at the epicenter (nobody lives closer than 212 km from the...

San Ramon, California, appears to have broken a new earthquake record over the last two weeks: A total of 408 small quakes have shaken the East Bay city, almost four times the record set in 2003 in half the amount of time. "I've not felt so many tremors in decades," Mark Stone said outside a San Ramon Starbucks on Tuesday morning. "My dog, Gimmel, she's the first one to know a couple of seconds before." The U.S. Geological Survey reports that as of Oct. 13, the Northern California Seismic Network had detected 408 earthquakes – at least a dozen since...

At least five people were killed Monday after South Asia was shaken by a magnitude-7.5 earthquake that was centered in a remote corner of Afghanistan and felt across Pakistan and India. A rescue official in northwestern Pakistan confirmed the five deaths to the Associated Press, adding that another 100 people were wounded in home collapses in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. State-run Pakistani TV had earlier reported that at least one person had died when the roof of a home collapsed in the eastern city of Kasur. The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake's epicenter was in the far northern...

Sanden Totten October 20 Angelenos live under constant threat of a major earthquake, but a controversial new study from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory puts a number on that threat. The scientific paper claims there is a 99.9 percent chance of an earthquake between magnitude 5 and 6.3 in less than three years. The study was published earlier this month by the American Geophysical Union's Earth and Space Science journal. The bold claim has taken many in the seismic community by surprise. Lead author, Andrea Donnellan of JPL, said this study used GPS and airborne radar data to look at land...

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — If scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena are correct, a moderately-sized earthquake is expected within the next two-and-a-half years. JPL experts predict a possible 5.0 magnitude quake in Los Angeles, but say it very well could be stronger. JPL geophysicist Dr. Andrea Donnellan, along with seven other scientists, has been using radar and GPS to measure Southern California’s chances for a sizable earthquake, and has made a sobering hypothesis about another big one. “When the La Habra earthquake happened, it was relieving some of that stress, and it actually shook some of the upper sediments...

On 16 September 2015, an 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck the coast of central Chile, triggering tsunami warnings and coastal evacuations. Lasting three minutes, this powerful earthquake occurred along the boundary of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. By combining Sentinel-1A radar scans from 24 August and 17 September, the rainbow-coloured patterns in the image show how the surface has shifted as a result of the quake. ‘Interferograms' such as these allow scientists to quantify ground movement. By counting the ‘fringes', it is estimated that the earthquake caused a displacement of 1.4 m along the viewing direction of the radar...
