Oklahoma had more earthquakes in 2015 than every state combined, including Hawaii but excluding massive Alaska.

Forty-nine U.S. states recorded a total of 1,586 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or greater.

Oklahoma recorded 857 quakes. That leaves the other 48 U.S. states with a combined total of 729.

Oklahoma had more earthquakes in 2015 than every state combined,

Since Oklahoma is one of the states this statement is patently ridiculous.

Saw a show on this. The experts were raving its from disposal/dispersal of fracking fluids underground.

I love all the posts in the comments blaming fracking.

If fracking is directly responsible, why is it ONLY responsible in OK? Fracking occurs all over the US.

Understood. But who will they blame it on? Fracking, global warming, global cooling, climate change, racism, homophobia or Islamophobia?

Yep.... they’re saying it is the high pressure injection, disposal wells. The commission has made them abandon several disposal wells etc. Originally the insurance companies were taking the position that earthquake insurance did not cover “man made” earthquakes. Now the insurance commission has ruled against that position and says yes they do. Lots of shaking going on though. It seems like a major fault runs pretty much right down I-35. I live about 6 miles west of I-35.

I’m curious if the ground level is rising or sinking as a result of the quakes.

Growing up in the sixties our elementary and junior high school classes taught about all this earthquake activity Oklahoma had in earlier times. We wondered why we never got any such excitement instead of just dumb old tornadoes.

Guess the unnatural lull is over.

Yeah... it is strange. I’ve lived in OKC all of my life. 56 years. Never felt an earthquake until about 4 or 5 years ago. The 5.6 we had 4 years ago REALLY rocked the house.

Even if fracking were causing minor earthquakes...wouldn’t that be a good thing? If we were actually capable of releasing the energy of plate movement with minor quakes, by ‘lubricating’ it with fracking fluids, couldn’t that technology be exploited to prevent devastating earthquakes in California?

That would be, of course, if I believed fracking caused earthquakes.

This site gives a pretty good tally of the quakes:

http://earthquaketrack.com/p/united-states/oklahoma/recent

Something the anti-frackers ignore is the DEPTH of the quake. They seem to average around 5 km in Oklahoma...that’s a little over 3 miles deep.

Here is the gubmint’s info on the average well depth in OK:

https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_crd_welldep_s1_a.htm

Not quite 1.5 miles deep.
