Norma McCorvey, the anonymous plaintiff in Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in the United States, reshaping the nation’s social and political landscapes and inflaming one of the most divisive controversies of the past half-century, died on Saturday in Katy, Tex. She was 69. Ms. McCorvey died of heart failure in an assisted-living home, said Joshua Prager, a New York journalist who has written about her for Vanity Fair and is working on a book about the Roe v. Wade decision.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly has issued new orders to agency heads that considerably expand the number of immigrants who can be detained and deported under new executive orders President Donald Trump signed last month. Under Kelly’s orders, which were contained in two memorandums distributed to agency heads on Friday, hundreds of thousands more immigrants in the United States illegally will be subject to what’s known as expedited removal proceedings to quickly get them out of the country.

.....Professor Ronald L Feinman predicted that the former reality TV star will stay in the top job "between the 31 days of William Henry Harrison in 1841," who died pneumonia and the "199 days of James A. Garfield in 1881," who died 79 days after he was shot by an assassin "after terrible suffering and medical malpractice." Even if his time in office is "dragged out," Feinman predicted that Trump is unlikely to last the 16 months and 5 days of 12th president Zachary Taylor, who died of a digestive ailment while Head of State in 1850. The 20th-century American...

DARE TO DREAM Someone once commented that "One of the most powerful things in the world is a dream. Not those dreams that come to us while we sleep, but those we consciously pursue while we are awake." Think of how dreams have shaped our modern life. Of Martin Luther King whose famous speech began, I have a dream today." And of Robert Kennedy who said, "Some men see things as they are and ask "Why?"; I dream things that never were and ask 'Why not?'" Think of how children's lives are often shaped by their...

Over the past couple of days, immigration enforcement agents have round up almost 700 illegal aliens—75 percent of which had criminal records. Rep. Nancy Pelosi disputed the claim, but Immigration and Customs Enforcement also confirmed the figure released by the Department of Homeland Security. IJ Review’s Joe Perticone had more: The claim that an overwhelming majority of immigrants targeted in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids last week were convicted criminals is correct and backed by hard numbers, despite skepticism from House Democrats. […]Independent Journal Review obtained a copy of the list of various criminal offenses provided to the members...

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has suggested that the people who voted for Donald Trump and Brexit are a bunch of fascists. It’s always nice when someone of such eminent ecclesiastical authority confirms from on high something which many of us long suspected: that the Establishment really just does not have a f###ing clue – and that that’s why we were so right to vote for Trump and Brexit. If Welby had wanted to play a clever game, what he would have done in his speech to the General Synod is keep resolutely schtum about his position on contentious...

JPC-PROD / Shutterstock Robert Kennedy Jr. and Robert De Niro convened a news conference on Wednesday at the National Press Club to announce a $100,000 cash reward for anyone who identifies a peer-reviewed scientific study demonstrating that the mercury in vaccines is safe. Though the challenge was perhaps something of a stunt, the significance of the appearance was underscored by Kennedy’s confirming that President Trump may ask him to lead a commission on autism. The consequences of such a commission could extend beyond the narrow vaccine/autism debate. More significantly, the commission could expose the incentives driving vaccination policy, which, in...

Milo Yiannopoulos is about to go mainstream Republican, sort of, grabbing himself a keynote address at the Conservative Political Action Conference next month. The Washington gathering, known as CPAC, is the premiere event for established conservatives. This year’s speakers include Vice President Mike Pence, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, former presidential candidate Carly Fiorina and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, as well as media personalities like Lou Dobbs and Mark Levin. None of the 60 or so confirmed speakers, though, will have more stage time than Yianoppoulos at this year’s event, which runs Feb. 22-25 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention...

On Wednesday morning, Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan explicitly advocated that since Trump administration spokesmen are liars, they should be denied any admission to the network Sunday talk shows. She called up Sunday show hosts and demanded it. Can you imagine the Post arguing in 1998 that the Clinton administration should be denied access to television because they were obviously lying about Monica Lewinsky? Here’s Sullivan’s conclusion: There is no reason to be surprised about the public statements of the Prevarication Administration. But there is reason to doubt whether giving proven liars a regular platform is something that ought...

A federal appeals court has ruled that a Florida law restricting doctors from asking patients whether they own guns restricts the right to free speech. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the law violated doctors’ First Amendment right to free speech, and concluded that the state failed to prove that physicians were infringing on patients’ Second Amendment rights. A previous decision by a three-judge panel by the 11th Circuit upheld the law, but those suing the state asked for the full circuit court to re-consider the case. ...
