  • Supreme Court rules in redistricting case: Illegal immigrants, other non-citizens can be counted

    The Washington Times ^ | April 4, 2016 | Stephan Dinan
A unanimous Supreme Court ruled Monday that illegal immigrants and other non-citizens can be counted when states draw their legislative districts, shooting down a challenge by Texas residents who said their own voting power was being diluted. The ruling does not grant non-citizens power to vote, but says the principle of “one person, one vote” doesn’t require localities to only count those who are actually eligible to vote. Justice Ruth Baden Ginsburg, writing for the court, said even though only eligible voters are supposed to cast ballots, elected officials represent all people within their districts, and it is that act...
  • Arizona Hispanics worried over Texas redistricting case

WASHINGTON -- A separate redistricting case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday has a Hispanic congressmen worried it could lead to giving the majority Anglo population a new tool to maintain political control despite changing demographics. The case challenges the practice in Texas to use census population to divide up the state into different legislative districts. That system, the same as used in Arizona, is based on a head count done every decade by the U.S. Census. But challengers contend that's not fair, as population does not equate with ability to vote. So they are asking the justices to...

The Census Bureau has finally released definitive statistics on the number of uninsured in 2014 and the news is not good for Obamacare (unless, of course, you have abysmally low expectations for government performance). The population-wide uninsured rate fell from 14.5% in calendar year 2013 to 11.7% in 2014. The total number of uninsured dropped from 45.2 million in 2013 to 36.7 million in 2014–a net of 8.5 million who gained coverage [1]. There’s 2 things to note about this new number, which is far more definitive than the previous numbers put out by Urban Institute, RAND Corporation, Commonwealth Fund,...
  • Question regarding Census: 2015 National Content Test

Well, my residence has been "selected" to participate in the "mandatory" census-type survey, 2015 National Content Test. Never heard of this before, and am leery about participating - so I won't. It is not a census year, so this is not required by law in my thinking. My question regards the "required by law" part. Laws can only apply to people or entities. The form threatens me by telling me that my response is "required by law," but since the census only selects residences/properties, I am not personally, specifically named to answer. This seems like a very unenforceable "law" if...

There is a National Survey of College Graduates census, dubbed voluntary, that occurs every so often. I believe that it affects about 200,000 people each time it is done. If you get one, you may not feel it as easily "voluntary", as there is significant pressure in the form of a half-dozen or more mail contacts, phone contacts, and I've heard perhaps personal door knocks.

An East Dallas woman is outraged after she claims one U.S. Census worker showed up at her door for a housing survey and would not take “no” for an answer. Sonia Platz said the worker went as far as to camp out in her yard as she waited for Platz to change her mind. “She’s ringing the bell, knocking on the door. And I’m like, ‘I don’t want to participate.’” Said Platz The East Dallas resident said it started with a series of three letters from the U.S. Census Bureau. A few days later after receiving the third later, a...

The U.S. Census Bureau is experimenting with eliminating the word “race” altogether in its 2020 survey, according to a report from the Pew Research Center on Thursday. As part of its final research push before finalizing its 2020 wording, test-census forms will be sent to 1.2 million households later this fall in without any references to “race” or “origin.” Instead, the forms will ask: “Which categories describe person 1?” Respondents will then be able to choose from the usual list of racial and ethnic categories.

A security guard was critically injured in a shooting at the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters in Suitland on Thursday evening. Prince George’s County fire department spokesman Mark Brady said that an adult male who was standing guard at a gate to the facility had suffered at least one gunshot wound to his upper body. Brady said the victim’s condition was “extremely critical.” At about 7:45 p.m., roughly two dozen military-clad officers with rifles entered the Census campus and began sweeping through parking garages and lots. It was unclear which police agency the officers represented. Around the same time, an announcement...

White children will be outnumbered by minority kids in the United States in just five years, new Census Bureau projections reveal. This is the result of an ongoing trend of declining birth among white Americans and a baby boom among immigrant groups, as well as a surge in immigration. By the year 2020, 50.2 percent of all children in the US are expected to be non-white, according to the Census. By 2044, whites will be outnumbered by minorities. The Census study, released this week, predicts that by year 2060, nearly 20 percent of the population will be foreign born -...

The federal government is considering allowing those of Middle Eastern and North African descent to identify as such on the next 10-year census, which could give Arab-Americans and other affected groups greater political clout and access to public funding, among other things. The U.S. Census Bureau will test the new Middle East-North Africa (MENA) classification for possible inclusion on the 2020 census if it gets enough positive feedback about the proposed change by Sunday, when the public comment period ends. Arab-Americans, who make up the majority of those who would be covered by the MENA classification, have previously been classified...

We have seen how great the government runs internet-based systems; just look at healthcare.gov. Those who count the vote decide nothing. Those who count the voters decide everything.—Attributed to Joseph Stalin. He’s doing it agaaaiin! It has been observed that it is more important to be able to count the votes than to win them; creative counting can overcome a sizable shortfall. That is why holding the position of Secretary of State in the individual states is so important; the Sec. controls the counting process. Elections have been stolen on numerous occasions by creative counting - just ask Richard Nixon.

By adding an average of 803 new residents each day between July 1, 2013 and July 1, 2014, Florida passed New York to become the nation’s third most populous state, according to U.S. Census Bureau state population estimates released today. Florida’s population grew by 293,000 over this period, reaching 19.9 million. The population of New York increased by 51,000 to 19.7 million. California remained the nation’s most populous state in 2014, with 38.8 million residents, followed by Texas, at 27.0 million. Although the list of the 10 most populous states overall was unchanged, two other states did change positions, as...

The most immediate consequence of the Democrats’ midterm disaster was losing control of the Senate and ceding Congress to the GOP. For the next two years, Democrats will have to deal with conservative legislation, right-wing hijinks, and—in all odds—a vacancy crisis, as Republicans freeze confirmations and refuse to fill spots in the executive branch and on the federal bench. That is bad for the Democratic Party. What’s on the horizon is worse. As Amy Walter notes for the Cook Political Report, Democrats lost big at all levels of government, including the states. “Today,” she writes, “about 55 percent of all...

Four of the six Census regions apparently falsified economic data. Philadelphia, NY, Atlanta, LA, Chicago and Denver Census Offices have million dollar tax-paid budgets w/ little oversight. The city known as America’s story factory is making up Census data. In the latest allegation of The Post’s exclusive probe into fishy goings-on at the Census Bureau, a new whistleblower says workers in the Los Angeles region have been manipulating economic data. Contact information for the veteran Census worker — who reached out to me by e-mail recently and whom I interviewed by phone — has been turned over to congressional investigators who are looking into data falsification in other parts of the country. “Everybody knows falsification is going on,” the whistleblower told me, adding the malfeasance in the

The three continued to collect data even after she reported them. ... Census is broken up into six regions. Cheating has already been proven in the Philadelphia region. The Northeast, once the nation’s political engine that produced presidents, House speakers and Senate giants including the late Edward M. Kennedy, is losing clout in Washington as citizens flee the high-tax region, according to experts worried about the trend. The Census Bureau reports that population growth has shifted to the South and the result is that the 11 states that make up the Northeast are being bled dry of representation in Washington. Critics blame rising taxes in states such as Massachusetts and Connecticut for limiting population growth in the Northeast to just 15 percent from 1983 to 2013, while the...
