National Survey of College Graduates, from the Census bureau

There is a National Survey of College Graduates census, dubbed voluntary, that occurs every so often.

I believe that it affects about 200,000 people each time it is done.

If you get one, you may not feel it as easily "voluntary", as there is significant pressure in the form of a half-dozen or more mail contacts, phone contacts, and I've heard perhaps personal door knocks.

TOPICS: Government
KEYWORDS: census; nscg
Anybody have experience with the NSCG? Or, short of that, knowledge or opinion on it?

I wouldn’t fill it out...it’s none of their business. I received an American Community Survey from the Census bureau and refused to fill it out. It was quite invasive and was NONE of their business. I was harassed for almost three months. I refused to answer their phone calls or answer the door. I might get 6 - 7 calls per day sometimes. The last straw was when the census lady opened my mailbox. I called the police. I didn’t get bothered anymore.

Good to know anecdotally what takes to stop the harrassment (ie, mailbox/police).

I’m not planning on submitting it... the decadal census should be the only mandated thing to participate in.

http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/srvygrads/#sd says:

The U.S. Census Bureau conducted the NSCG for the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES). Initial data collection used a self-administered mail survey and, beginning in the 2010 survey cycle, a self-administered Web survey. The contact strategy used to request survey participation included a prenotification letter, a first mailing, a reminder letter, and a second mailing.

Nonrespondents to the initial data collection were followed up using computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI). In the 1990 decade and the 2003 survey cycle, if the paper questionnaire was not returned and telephone follow-up attempts failed, for certain selected cases, a computer-assisted personal visit interview was conducted.

For each survey cycle, the data collection effort typically lasted 6 to 8 months.

-----------------------------------

But looking farther down:

-----------------------------------

The weighted response rate for the 1993, 2003, and 2010 survey cycles ranged from 73% to 80%. For the subsequent rounds of the NSCG, the weighted response rates ranged from 87% to 95%.

-----------------------------

Sounds like a fair number of folks are just ignoring it

The Census Bureau is only authorized to enumerate the number of people in the US every ten years. ...All of their other surveys are not legally required, but only voluntary.
