    Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune ^ | October 27, 2003 | NATE CARLISLE
University of Missouri-Columbia students walking to class on this chilly autumn morning saw more than their breath. By 9 a.m., a dozen 18-foot-tall banners were lined up on Kuhlman Court, each offering information on abortion. They included graphic images of terminated fetuses and the abortion process. "We think it’s information," said Jonathan Block, media liaison with an MU student group called Justice For All: Students for Bio-Ethical Equality. "It’s graphic … but abortion is horrifying." At Speaker’s Circle, on the other side of the Arts & Sciences classroom building, students could see and hear from pro-choice activists who said they...

Hey, everyone. Just wanted to pass along that I ran into Attorney General Ashcroft (a fellow Missourian) at Hotel Invalides (Napoleon's tomb) in Paris on Monday, May 5. Someone saw him go in the back as we were walking around the place. We went to the front, hoping to go in and see him inside. However, the place is closed on the first Monday of each month, so we couldn't go in.Suddenly, about 15 cars starting pulling to the front of the building. We figured he would be coming out. So I told our group that, when he came out,...
  • Suit Alleges Graphic Sexual Instruction

Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune ^ | August 13, 2002 | Cory de Vera
The mother of a Southern Boone County middle school student claims in a lawsuit that the district broke the law by allowing a teacher to describe in class her first sexual experience, methods of masturbation and how to perform oral sex. The lawsuit, filed July 18 by Debra Clay of Ashland in Boone County Circuit Court, names teacher Sue Adams, Superintendent Mitch Holbrook and school board members. None has been served notice of the suit, however, because there are talks of a potential settlement, Clay’s attorney, Larry Marshall of Columbia, said. Clay’s petition alleges that Adams’ instruction violates state law...

One of the Boys of Summer: Remembering when baseball was innocent. STARHILL, LA — On the far side of a low hill, half a mile from Thompson Creek and down a gravel road few people ever have cause to drive, lies the grave of a phenomenal baseball player, a bona fide natural. His name was Roy Dale Craven. He died in the summer of 1974. He was nine years old. I've been thinking about Roy Dale a lot lately, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it was the disedifying spectacle of the millionaire ballplayers refusing to play at the All-Star...
  • Letter to Editor: U.N. headquarters should move to Sept. 11 grounds <MEGA BARF>

    Columbia Daily Tribune ^ | June 12, 2002 | Jim Bishop
U.N. headquarters should move to Sept. 11 grounds Published Wednesday, June 12, 2002 Editor, the Tribune: Whatever is built on the site of the Sept. 11 tragedy will become a symbol of our times. The city of New York would like to see the valuable 16-acre site used for office buildings. The survivors and families of the victims and many others would like the area to become a permanent memorial. I believe both aims can be achieved. The current United Nations complex is aging and outgrowing its current location. What a powerful statement of world solidarity against terrorism it would...

Brilliant beyond words to describe it. My daughter (14) and I just returned. Although there are some quibbles (focus on Lothlorien too brief, Galadriel says "I passed the test" in surprise, which is different than the book, the Balrog a bit weak, etc.), I was simply overwhelmed minute by minute. For any who complain I have to ask, did you ever in your wildest dreams expect LOTR to come to film in a manner such as this?I was disappointed to see so many 4-10 year old children in the theatre, but that just shows the quality of parenting these days. ...
  • Local Peace Activists Show Which Side They're On (Freeper Letter)

Published Tuesday, October 16, 2001 Editor, the Tribune: This letter is in response to the so-called peace activists who protest the U.S.-led attacks against the terrorists controlling Afghanistan. "Attacks hurt U.S. image, activists say," an article that appeared in the Oct. 8 Tribune, quotes several of Columbia’s loudest. Mark Haim, director of Mid-Missouri Peaceworks, and Lana Jacobs, from the St. Francis community, have spent all of their energy since the attacks on our country condemning the president, the U.S. and all Americans for all the evil in the world. The only comment from these two that I couldn’t find a ...

From: The Pro-Life Infonet Subject: Woman Wins Botched Abortion Lawsuit vs. Planned Parenthood Source: San Francisco Examiner; February 24, 2001 Woman Wins Botched Abortion Lawsuit vs. Planned Parenthood San Francisco, CA -- A woman who remained pregnant following a botched abortion three years ago has been awarded $672,610 from Planned Parenthood. As the court clerk read the jury's award Wednesday, the woman, whose unborn child lost two limbs in the abortion attempt before being aborted months later, lowered her head and wept, convinced her three-year court battle was finally over. And it is, but only for now. An attorney for ...
  • Ashcroft pick proves Bush’s inflexibility

    Columbia Daily Tribune ^ | January 4, 2001 | Richard Cohen
Ashcroft pick proves Bush’s inflexibility By RICHARD COHEN George W. Bush and I had a deal. In exchange for me accepting him as president of the United States, he would conduct himself in a moderate, distinctly down-the-middle fashion. This deal, as tacit as they come, has been broken with the nomination of John Ashcroft as attorney general. To put matters as Bush might, Ashcroft is a divider, not a uniter. Ashcroft is flat-out anti-abortion - no qualifiers for him, thank you. He is opposed to abortion almost no matter what, rape or incest notwithstanding. Only the life of the mother ...

BreakPoint with Charles Colson Commentary #010102 - 1/2/2001 A First Amendment Exception?: Suppression of Pro-Life Speech A Colorado law prohibits any person within a hundred feet of a "health care facility" to come within eight feet of another person to hand out leaflets. They may not display a sign or "engage in oral protest, education, or counseling with that person." So is this a violation of the First Amendment's prohibition of "laws abridging the freedom of speech"? You would think so, but the Supreme Court says no. In Hill v. Colorado, the Court ruled that Colorado's statute is valid. Justice ...

    ABC News ^ | November 18, 2000
According to the Florida Division of Elections, 18 of 67 counties had completed their counts and yielded 52 votes for Bush and 23 for Gore. In what could become a major blow to Gore, a significant number of the ballots were disqualified due to irregularities, such as multiple votes or the lack of a proper signatures. So far, 142 ballots have been disqualified in the 29 reporting counties. In addition, ABCNEWS has learned that nearly half of the 307 overseas absentee ballots yet to be tallied in Democratic-leaning Miami-Dade County have been thrown out because of irregularities.

I was pretty down about the election this morning. But I am reading Old Testament history (I/II Samuel, I/II Kings, and I/II Chronicles) during my lunch hour. Today I hit the following passage from I Kings 19: 3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better ...

Dubya in Columbia, MO. - Preliminary Report We (myself, my 9 year old son, my 13 year old daughter, and her friend) arrived at the airport about 10:40 am. There were already streams of cars headed in. As soon as I walked in, a local television reporter stopped me and asked for an interview. "What is it about Bush that you support," or something to that matter. I told him, first and foremost, his character. I said it's time to put integrity and honor back into the White House after it's been missing for eight years. Also told him that ...
