Letter to Editor: U.N. headquarters should move to Sept. 11 grounds <MEGA BARF>

U.N. headquarters should move to Sept. 11 grounds

Published Wednesday, June 12, 2002

Editor, the Tribune: Whatever is built on the site of the Sept. 11 tragedy will become a symbol of our times. The city of New York would like to see the valuable 16-acre site used for office buildings. The survivors and families of the victims and many others would like the area to become a permanent memorial. I believe both aims can be achieved.

The current United Nations complex is aging and outgrowing its current location. What a powerful statement of world solidarity against terrorism it would make if the new headquarters of the U.N. were to be erected on the site. It would be both a remembrance of the event and a warning to others that the world stands united against terrorism.

If they did that, I'd probably have to crash something into it myself.

If they want to start the revolution then this is a nifty way to do it. If the UN is to be moved make it to Baghdad....just before we level it.

It was a financial site and was selected as a target, at least partly, for that reason. If it comes back as something else, they will have won another round.

I get the feeling that, if the UN tries to claim that site, there will be another one of those Jeff Head petitions heading to NYC post haste.

"The current United Nations complex is aging and outgrowing its current location."

What this hopeless systemic liberal most likely does not realize is that we, the U.S., cannot touch the property that the U.N. occupies in NY.

In our eagerness to bend over and grab our ankles for every other country in the world after WW2, We deeded that parcel to the U.N. We can't even touch land that is within our own borders!!

If they moved the U.N. to that site.....I'll have to fish my tin-foil beanie hat out from the back of the closet and repent at the altar of the conspiracy cult and believe again

Cool finds. But I gotta ask. What's a guy in Florida doing pulling up letters to mid-Missouri newspapers? Where did you search?

A bold and wonderful suggestion! However, most UN officials have established confidential bank acoounts in bank branches on the upper east side. It is into these accounts that much of the income of these officials is deposited and, since much of this income is, how shall we say this, "unreported" it would be impractical to move the accounts or draw any attention to them.

More important, however, most UN diplomats and, especially, UN bureaucrats have established residences on the upper east side for their mistresses and these residences, many of which have been around for years would be almost impossible to replicate in lower Manhattan. Finally, many of the children from these informal relationships attend schools on the upper east side and upper west side, up above Van Cortland Park, and to relocate these fine children would be painful. So, while the suggestion is appreciated, it is not feasible at this time.
