The Issue If Donald Trump's campaign approach seems familiar, it should. Ironically, the New York mogul is borrowing from the populist playbook that propelled George C. Wallace's 1968 independent campaign for president. If you're looking to place a friendly wager on which Republican candidate will win Alabama's GOP presidential primary March 1, the smart money has to be on either Texas Sen. Ted Cruz or New York businessman Donald Trump. Cruz has been barnstorming the South, campaigning in Alabama and other states participating in the "SEC Primary," when the biggest single haul of GOP convention delegates will be awarded. Cruz...

In the confirmed red state of Alabama, few areas can match the conservatism of The Trussville Tribune coverage area. I’ve often joked that our neck of the woods is so conservative that it makes Shelby County look down right liberal. No doubt that northeast Jefferson County and our neighboring communities in St. Clair County are a God fearing, church going, Bible toting, smaller government, anti-illegal immigration, anti-abortion group of voters. And no one is apologizing for that belief system. When U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz visits the Trussville Civic Center on Sunday afternoon, he’ll find substantial support among the locals and...

Sen. Ted Cruz will swing through Alabama this weekend as he attempts to solidify support among Southern evangelical voters, a key demographic in the race for the GOP presidential nomination. Polls show that Cruz is a popular candidate among voters identifying themselves as "very" conservative, including tea party activists who seem to have embraced his anti-government rhetoric. And if Cruz can solidify that voting base, insiders say he has a good chance – like Rick Santorum in 2012 and Mike Huckabee in 2008 – to win the Alabama GOP primary. "I do think the 'SEC Primary' is Cruz's best chance...

Donald Trump is taking heat on social media for a Sunday afternoon tweet of statistics purporting to show that the vast majority of murdered black people in the U.S. are killed by other black people. The tweet was apparently Trump’s response to a Twitter thread about support from white supremacists for the GOP front-runner. It also comes the day after a Black Lives Matter protester said he was physically and verbally assaulted at a Trump rally. The image Trump posted includes a list of “USA Crime Statistics ~ 2015.†The two that are highlighted are “Blacks Killed by Police ~~...

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) says refugees fleeing war-torn Syria are trying to come to the U.S. for a “paid vacation†in the form of generous welfare programs. “I’m one of these folks that think we need to stop paying these folks to come here, and we’re paying them about $15,000 a year in free health care, free food, free shelter, free clothing, free transportation,†Brooks said on the Dale Jackson Show on Friday, as first reported by the liberal media outlet ThinkProgress. ADVERTISEMENT “You know, just go down the litany of wealth-transfer programs that these people are entitled to, and...

From TedCruz.org: Monday, the Cruz for President campaign announced the endorsement of Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks, who is also running as a delegate in support of Cruz for the Alabama GOP primary, which will be held on March 1. Congressman Brooks will serve as chairman of the Cruz campaign’s Alabama leadership team. Last week, Heidi Cruz submitted paperwork on behalf of the Cruz for President campaign to be on the GOP primary ballot in Alabama – Ted Cruz was one of only four presidential candidates to submit a full slate of delegates. “America needs a president with both a keen...

Miss Alabama Meg McGuffin finished as the Fourth Runner Up in the Miss America 2016 pageant tonight. But she may have landed first in the hearts of those who are sick and tired of Donald Trump. McGuffin said Trump is an "entertainer" and that Republicans should be "terrified" by the possibility of having him as President of the United States. McGuffin, Miss Alabama 2015 had a few choice words about Donald Trump as she competed for the 2016 Miss America Competition crown. Miss America judge Taya Kyle, widow of US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, asked McGuffin the following on stage...

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - Tuscaloosa is preparing to host Republican presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas Tuesday night. Cruz will serve as the keynote speaker at the annual Lincoln Reagan dinner, organized by the Tuscaloosa County Republican Party chapter. The event is sold out. Although the dinner boasts a long list of well-known keynote speakers, chapter president Jim Zeanah says this is first time a current presidential candidate has headlined the event. Zeanah says organizers booked Cruz before they realized just how popular he would be with Alabamians. "The Tea Party folks from all over the state...

Everyone thought that Donald Trump was way in over his head when he decided to throw his hat in the ring for 2016 presidential election. Now, there are not nearly as many people who think the same way, and that was evident when 30,000 people turned out for a Republican pep rally in Alabama on Friday. Now, he’s beginning to pull away from the rest of the field and very well could widen his lead in the 2016 presidential polls. Topped off in a red hat, Donald Trump stepped out before 30,000 supporters in Alabama on Friday night, and it...

MOBILE, Ala. — It was the most audacious Donald Trump spectacle yet in a summer full of them, as the Republican presidential front-runner, in his Boeing 757, thundered over a football stadium here Friday night and gave a raucous speech to one of the largest crowds of the 2016 campaign. But Trump’s flashy performance was about more than showmanship. His visit to Alabama was coolly strategic, touching down in the heart of red America and an increasingly important early battleground in the Republican nominating contest. The Manhattan developer, who strode onstage to “Sweet Home Alabama,” is trying to show that...

Vivianna Rodriguez cannot wait for Donald Trump's speech Friday night in Mobile, Alabama. "I was shocked when I heard that he was coming to Mobile. But I was very excited [as well]. Not because he was speaking, but because we're going to do something about it," she said. Vivianna is a 24 year-old senior at the University of South Alabama —whose football stadium will host Trump on Friday— and she is an American-born daughter of a single-parent undocumented Mexican immigrant. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has referred to those with her background as "anchor babies." It's those types of comments...

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who is campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination with a unique message of compassionate conservatism and cultural inclusion, will pick up a head-turning endorsement Monday in the Bible Belt. Alabama Gov. Robert J. Bentley (R) plans to endorse Kasich at a campaign event in Birmingham, according to a Kasich campaign official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose the plans. With Bentley's backing, Kasich hopes to show that his message can appeal across the Republican spectrum — from the Midwest, where he has been a popular governor, to New England, where he is rising...

PELHAM— It was standing room only at the Pelham Civic Complex Aug. 9 when Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz addressed citizens in Shelby County. More than 850 people were in attendance for the Shelby County Republican Party’s “Southern Social” to see Cruz, who announced his candidacy for the 2016 presidential election on March 23. “What Ted Cruz is known for today, and the reason so many of you have packed this place, is because you know that Ted Cruz is a man who is going to stand up for what’s right,” said Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill. “Ted...

Greeted by a crowd exceeding expectations in Huntsville, Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz rolled into the Rocket City on Sunday evening as an apparent candidate on the rise. In an NBC News post-debate poll released Sunday, Cruz rose to No. 2 among the 17 GOP candidates – an indication, the junior senator from Texas said, that his campaign is resonating with voters. "God bless the great state of Alabama," Cruz said in greeting a crowd estimated by local Republican officials as more than 1,000 in the Jackson Center in Cummings Research Park. "Holy cow! I think we've got the whole...

The Shelby County Republican Party announced Wednesday they will be hosting a “Southern Social” with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tx.) and moon pies as part of a series of events the presidential candidate has scheduled that day in Alabama. In an effort to raise awareness of his presidential campaign among Republicans in Alabama, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, will deliver the keynote address at the Tuscaloosa Republican Party’s Lincoln-Reagan Dinner on Aug. 25. The Lincoln-Reagan Dinner began in 2006 and has featured keynote speakers like Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and the GOP 2012 nominee, and Karl Rove, a political consultant and policy advisor who served as senior advisor to President George W. Bush. The local Lincoln-Reagan Dinner also serves to recognize Republican leaders in the state. In the past, Gov. Robert Bentley and former U.S. Representative Spencer...

The Coosa County Republican Party will play host a conference call with presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, at about 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21. Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan will place the call from the Coosa County E-911 Conference Center at 60 Communications Dr. in Rockford. This event is part of the “Calling Alabama” program by the Alabama Republican Party that provides opportunities each month for participants to hear live conversations with presidential candidates. The Coosa County Republican Party is only the second group to hold one of these events live from its meeting. Tallapoosa County played...
